The Lumineers Folk Off At Red Bull Sound Space

You probably know The Lumineers from their folk-rock singles “Hey Ho” or “Stubborn Love”, but what you probably don’t know is that in a live setting they put on an full on absolute barn burner of a performance. They put Mumford & Sons in the shadows, the trio accompanied by supporting backline members ensnare you with genuine storytelling and joyously rolling melodies. Folk rock has never been so prominent in mainstream culture and The Lumineers propel themselves into Top 40 lists effortlessly. We caught The Lumineers at the Red Bull Sound Space at The World Famous KROQ for a Monday afternoon encounter. They’re currently pushing their new album “Cleopatra” (due April 9th, 2016), which is a proper follow up to their self titled 2012 record. Almost exactly 4 years later, the Denver based group are ready to shine again. The brand new songs we heard from this upcoming record, “Ophelia” and “Cleopatra“, dove much deeper than their initial singles – more intricate stories told through honest lyrics and building upon instrumentation they know works. Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites and Neyla Pekarek – the base trio – explained their infinite gratitude to their initial tracks which broke them, and how happy they are to

Weezer Plays Intimate Show in Red Bull Soundspace at KROQ Studios

This Tuesday afternoon was made infinitely better thanks to our friends at Red Bull and KROQ! The two household-name brands teamed up a while ago to put together the Red Bull Sound Space – a full-fledged performance venue nestled in the back of the KROQ studio, where performances are broadcasted worldwide via the internet. Bands large (usually large) and small stop through on the invitation of the station to treat industry and fans to an intimate performance. You either win your way in via KROQ, or get invited, so everyone there is in an amazing mood. This Tuesday, in line with promoting The White Album and an upcoming co-headline tour with Panic! At The Disco, Weezer blew the hinges off the tiny room with a festival worthy set. The age of the crowd ranged from 8 to greyed executive, everyone was completely thrilled to be there. Rivers, Brian, Scott and Patrick took the stage like they were casually settling in for a jam session – no banter with the crowd, comfortably timid nods to screaming fanatics in the packed crowd – and within the first heavy riffs of ‘Hash Pipe’, they slammed us all into action. Following up with full

Joey Badass Rips the Mic At The Belasco On Classic LA Night

On Wednesday night, Joey Badass headlined The Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles as a part of Red Bull Sound Select’s, 30 Days in L.A. Joey Badass showed why he is the illest M.C. in Hip Hop right now.  The preeminent Pro Era MC was joined on the bill by Chicago’s Lil Herb and local, L.A. crew Warm Brew. There is nothing like Fall in Los Angeles. Last week, the Santa Ana winds moved in to blow away the built up smog of a long, hot and punishing summer. Just a few hours of rain on Monday served to wash away the impurities in the air to reveal the true palette of colors in the City of Angels. It felt like it would be a classic type of night in L.A. One of the photos you see in your mind when you think about the good times. One of those nights that makes you proud of your city. With the transient nature of industry in L.A., sometimes it’s easy to forget there are millions of real people born, raised, schooled and molded by the teachers, artists and streets of Los Angeles. People who have nothing to do with Hollywood movie

Sylvan Esso Moves The Fonda for Day 3 of 30 Days in L.A.

Day 3 of Red Bull Sound Select’s, #30DaysInLA featured performances by Sylvan Esso, Race Banyon and Akua at The Fonda. The evening was sold out, but Red Bull kept the crowd light rather than packing the room to capacity – which was a nice relief. I’ve experienced many sardine-packed nights at the Fonda, it was good to see the promoters give back in a conscious way to the fans. This Year’s Complete Calendar and A Look Back At Last Year’s 30 Days. This year the #30DaysInLA lineup is a bit lighter (headliner-wise) and even lighter on the support acts, most of who are relatively unknown in the Los Angeles market, but as the neon signs in the venue declare – Red Bull is here to BREAK MUSIC. The atmosphere during the opening acts has a battle of the bands like vibe to it, you can feel them fighting to make an impact on the crowd (who the majority of is there for the headliner). Sometimes they hit the mark and stick, sometimes they’re local and draw on their own, but sometimes they become a complete afterthought. Akua is a Montreal based one-woman band, gently crooning to the audience with even

Ho99o9, Cerebral Ballzy and Fat Tony in Venice for Red Bull Sound Select

What more can I say about punk rock, hip hop mongrels, Ho99o9 that I haven’t already said? Are there truly any words that can describe the sheer chaos, danger and magick that ensues at one of their live shows? Last night in Venice Beach, Red Bull Sound Select put together one of their most interesting and diverse lineups to date and all you needed was an RSVP link and $3 to be initiated into the Ho99o9 Death Kult. Along with Brooklyn punkers Cerebral Ballzy and Houston M.C. Fat Tony, I witnessed a somewhat sleepy crowd transform into a swirling cauldron of aggression and questionable intentions. The Del Monte Speakeasy in Venice is like a stone mausoleum with a bar. It’s concrete floors and low ceilings, along with dim lighting and the ghosts of Venice OG’s fighting has a gothic, absinthe drinking vibe to it. I arrived early, half expecting a line of mutants wrapping down Windward Blvd and around the alley on Speedway, much like the scene outside of the Mystery Box in Downtown Los Angeles when Ho99o9 played there for the Horrors of 1999 EP release party a few months ago. As the clock ticked closer to Fat Tony

Live Stream: Cold War Kids Intimate Performance on Red Bull TV

It’s hard to believe that June 15th will mark 10 years since Cold War Kids released their first EP, Mulberry Street.  Since then they have fought the good fight of rock and roll bands in the main stream.  Somehow, Cold War Kids are able to maintain their originality and edge and still sell records.  They are a GREAT example of a band that can make money and still make good music. On Wednesday, June 10th at 2pm pacific time, Cold War Kids will enter Red Bull Sound Space at the KROQ radio station to play an intimate show for just 275 fans. Chances are you weren’t one of the lucky ones to win tickets to this event but you can stream this show LIVE and up to 24 hours after the show ends, right here on JankySmooth.com.  I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with what Red Bull is doing in music. I was able to attend the Alabama Shakes Red Bull Sound Space performance last month but Janky Smooth was not cleared to shoot or write about that show.  This time, Janky Smooth will be shooting the event along with a review of the performance. But why count on

King Tuff and The Shrine in Venice for Red Bull Sound Select

A slew of music devotees inundated the streets of Venice last night as The Shrine supported King Tuff at Del Monte Speakeasy. With the term “speakeasy” in the venue title, it was evident only a limited amount of people would be fortunate enough attend. Red bull Sound Select presented this extraordinary show at a cost that is less than your morning coffee, so it was no shock that hundreds of humans embellished in black stood agog in a line that wrapped around the corner. As I entered the oldest speakeasy in Los Angeles (Happy 100th Birthday Del Monte), I instantaneously knew I was in for a commoving night. I found myself in a dimly lit room that looked as though it was only capable of maintaining a 100-person capacity. Knowing that The Shrine and King Tuff were to perform in this intimate, yet grimy setting was invigorating. I knew I would soon relive my 15-year-old angsty teenage days, with no shits given and one motive: to enjoy some damn good music. To say The Shrine warmed up the crowd exquisitely would be a complete understatement. They didn’t just warm up the crowd, they melted faces. Ironically enough, faces weren’t the

Live Stream: Alabama Shakes Intimate Performance on Janky Smooth

If you close your eyes and listen to Alabama Shakes you feel as if you have been transported to another era.  It’s the type of music that transcends genre. Frontwoman, Brittany Howard’s voice is effortlessly epic- reminiscent of the tortured textures of the likes of Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin. Today at 2pm pacific time, Alabama Shakes will be performing live for only 275 fans at Red Bull Sound Space located in the KROQ radio station’s broadcast facility in Culver City along with a Q and A with the band. Chances are that you are NOT one of the lucky fans selected to attend the show but you can stream the show LIVE, worldwide on JankySmooth.com and for 24 hours after the performance.  I WILL be attending the show (nya nya nya) but media outlets such as Janky Smooth have been asked not to review or cover the performance in any way so make sure you don’t miss the live stream or the footage that will be looping for the next 24 hours.  I’m beyond stoked that I will be able to live preview the new material from the new Alabama Shakes album, Sound and Color that is being released on

How To Dress Well at The Sayers Club

How To Dress Well in Gym Shorts and a Tank Top at The Sayers Club

On Wednesday night, Red Bull Sound Select returned to the Sayers Club for a night of music with How To Dress Well. This is not the type of show Janky Smooth would usually cover but we are always interested in what Red Bull is doing on the music scene. Their 30 Days in LA impressed us so much that we make a concerted effort to check out what they are pushing and in this case, they booked How To Dress Well so they could show off their band SWIMM. About half the bands on the Red Bull label and designated, “Sound Select” artists are worth paying attention to so I figured there would be about a 50/50 chance that I would see something good if I showed up for the opening band. I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of How to Dress Well but at the same time, the namesake of singer/songwriter Tom Krell doesn’t necessarily offend me either. All modern R & B should be held to the Frank Ocean litmus test and Tom Krell certainly is no Frank Ocean. I’m not a fan of Chris Brown R & B so as long as the How To

ASAP Mob Show in Hollywood Comes Close to Riot in the Streets

This was the 30th and final day of Red Bull Sound Select’s, 30 Days in L.A. It marks the end of November and the start of the holiday season. Day 1 seemed like it was yesterday and much of the month was a blur as I covered 17 shows and the rest of the Janky Smooth crew covered the other nights.   Red Bull really bit off a lot but they delivered a great bill on almost every night of the month. Walking up to the Hollywood Palladium, I witnessed a line of people trying to get into the ASAP Mob show that stretched from Argyle, onto sunset and around El Centro. Sunset was closed to traffic due to an earlier Xmas parade. There was something in the air and it wasn’t Xmas cheer. Things feel different. I don’t feel that unity that happens this time of year that makes us all forget our differences for this short period of time. There is a struggle going on in this country right now between the Norman Rockwell painting that projects an image of this country that doesn’t exist anymore and the reality of a decaying infrastructure, disappearing middle class, militarization of police

Juicy J Smokes Out The Fonda With a Little Help From His Friends

It was the first night after the decision in Ferguson and tensions were high in LA. So what better way to blow off some steam than at a Juicy J show. We are on the final stretch of the Red Bull Sound Select 30 day’s in LA with number 25 last night. The event was hosted at The Fonda in Hollywood with openers Tree and Two-Nine. Of course being a rap show in LA, the crowd was made up of mostly 18 year old white kids. The first Rap group, Tree took the stage with a half full crowd. These guys were fantastic. A bit of a mellow vibe to these dudes.  They kinda had a flow like A$AP Ferg. These guys had a short set which only lasted about 30 minutes which led to a 30 minute intermission. These Red Bull events are starting to feel deja vu like with the people I see in attendance. Last night I ran into Daniel from the LA Riots for about the 5th time this month, during the intermission. The next group Two-Nine started out with a moment of silence for Michael Brown, the unarmed 18 year old boy that was gunned
