Take This: Win 2 Tickets to Parkway Drive at the Hollywood Palladium

Australia has had its fair share of incredible rock bands. AC/DC, INXS, Royal Headache, to name a few. Perhaps the most celebrated band to come from the isolated continent since AC/DC though, is Parkway Drive. Considered to be the  kings of contemporary metalcore, few bands are able to deal such a heavy, clean sound with just as many brutal breakdowns as choruses you can sing to. Parkway Drive is playing the Hollywood Palladium on September 23rd for their Reverence North American tour and they are bringing a slew of great bands to play with them. August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada could draw decent numbers headlining the Palladium themselves, but with all three on one lineup, we feel lucky to be able to offer this giveaway. YOU CAN BUY TICKETS HERE OR. A Bloody Reunion: Bleeding Through At The Observatory

Back in the early 2000’s when I was a strapping young teenager, MTV2’s resurrected Headbanger’s Ball was a relevant place to get your metal fix and hear new bands. In those days, the young kings of the hill were Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Shadow’s Fall, and Bleeding Through. Unlike the other bands I just mentioned, Bleeding Through wasn’t just metal but metalcore, a genre that I always relegated to nothing more than Emo’s angry bastard child.  Bleeding Through is not only the exception to this (stupid) rule of mine but they’re one of my favorite bands. related content: The Most Complete Sound And Fury 2017 Review On Earth After going on a five year hiatus, Bleeding Through is back with one of the best metal albums I’ve heard all decade. Love Will Kill All is in my opinion, the band’s best album. Every song kicks ass and is perfectly set in the track list to sculpt a greater concept of what the band was, is, and will always be. The heavy parts hit more authentically than other metalcore bands in 2018 and the melodic parts capture you with undeniable hooks. The album’s first single “Set Me Free” is

We All Scored At Lethal Amount’s Pure Trash With Sylvain Sylvain

You read that title right. Every last one of us, from the most hideous to the most creeporial (or is the word creepatory?) got laid that night. This was just an event like no other, between the cool, rock and glam songs Sylvain Sylvain was licking out to the unmistakable camaraderie inspired by any Lethal Amounts shindig, getting laid gets easy. Part of the reason is that Lethal Amounts brought back their Pure Trash night which used to be a staple every week at Monty bar and ever since its absence, I’ve had a lot more trouble chasing tail. Now that it’s back though, lock up your daughters… fuck it, your sons too. related content: Snow Blood On The Leaves: Alice Glass, Zola Jesus, And Pictureplane At Teragram Sylvain went on a bit late, strutting on stage after midnight but that left a few hours of great hanging to transpire at the ol’ El Cid with plenty of palomas and beers being passed around. I was actually just as entertained by the groups of people talking and being natural with each other as I was for the show and that’s not a slight against the performance. Some weird dude was

In the City of Sad Angels: Loma and Jess Williamson At The Bootleg Theater

Jess  Williamson brought a brand new album and a newly-assembled band to The Bootleg on Sunday evening. Originally from Texas, singer/songwriter Jess Williamson recently made the move to Los Angeles. Her forlorn and sorrowful music has a bit of a country feel, an obvious product of her Texas roots. Her breathy delivery and use of organ sounds on the keyboard had the room rapt and attentive, swaying along with Jess’ voice. As she has formerly cited, sadness and heartbreak has a definitive influence and a prominent theme in the lyricism. Her set concluded to appreciative applause from the audience. related content: A Softly Harsh Friday The 13th W/ The Soft Moon and Boy Harsher At Teragram The sound of chirping birds brought the attention of the milling crowd as Loma began their set. The stage now prominently featured an easel with a drawing pad at the foreground. Emily Cross has a uniquely fragile vocal style and when manipulated, conjures the image of a chorus of sad angels. She didn’t look quite comfortable in the performance space as she paced with clasped hands and turned her back to the audience. It enhanced the effect of Loma’s sound, which is tender and

Punk Rock Karaoke: Play Music with Punk Legends

If you’ve ever had a fantasy of being a punk rock frontman or woman, you can make your fantasy a reality with Punk Rock Karaoke.  Not only can you sing your favorite punk anthems over world class sound systems at world famous clubs around the country but you can do it with punk legends like Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks, Bad Religion) and Stan Lee (The Dickies).   Last night Punk Rock Karaoke invaded Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach which has always been a stronghold for hardcore punk in America. The band was incredibly tight last night and most of the aspiring punks that took the mic to play with their heroes sounded pretty fucking good.  Even the very small percentage of people who butchered the songs were so fucking bad that it was amazingly entertaining.  Just like any Karaoke night, singers signed up on a list before the set started and some signed up after a few servings of liquid courage, mid set.  Songs on the list included, Nervous Breakdown, Bloodstains, Fuck Armageddon, Gigantor, Astro Zombies, Bikeage, and California Uber Alles, just to name a few. Punk Rock Karaoke has been around for almost 20 years now but most shows

Turn Table Tennis: Red Bull and DJ Fueled Ping Pong Tourney at The Standard

SPiN LA is the Susan Sarandon (yes, from Thelma & Louise) sponsored ping pong facility housed within the ultra-modern Standard Hotel in DTLA. Last night the Red Bull team overhauled the 2nd floor courts into a full on futuristic pong tournament, coupled with excellent dance music for their night of Turn Table Tennis. This Red Bull Sound Select event was a breeze to get into, unlike the usual events held at this venue – which was refreshing. We were met, at the top of the escalator, by classic house music spun by Red Bull Sound Select signee’s White Rainbow’s Adam Forkner, and tournament check in station. Dani Meigel (one of our photographers) and myself signed up as The Residents (I’m a resident DJ at this spot on Sunday’s, fun fact) and collected our paddles. As we waited for the tournament to start, we enjoyed the beefed up sound system Red Bull had brought to SPiN. People were warming up for the tourney, whose prize was a pair of coveted passes to the Sasquatch music festival, and electric sense of competition was in the air. The SPiN LA crew was on point with immediate response time at the bar – of

Chillin with Thurz and Tapioca and the Flea at the K-town Karaoke Throwdown

Last night I hit day 8 of Red Bull Sound Select’s, 30 days in LA. This night was a laid back Karaoke night with the title K-Town Karaoke Throwdown and was hosted by good friends of mine Tapioca and the Flea. When I got to the location and realized the event was split up into 20 rooms, I thought to myself “how the hell am I going to cover this?” Then Samuel Lopez of Tapioca and the Flea told me they had their own room for the night. “fuck yeah!” I exclaimed as I heard that. So for the following review I give you my night spent with the guys from Tapioca and the Flea. The night started off with just Samuel Lopez, Ronnie Watson, and I hanging out in the karaoke room. Sam serenaded us with music from The Beatles as we ordered up bottle service and food. Now the bottle service was actually decently priced and Tapioca and the flea was given a generous tab from Red Bull, but the food selection was just kind of odd. There were four food options to choose from, lychee, french fries, “cheese sticks” which were just mozzarella sticks with some weird

Courtney Barnett and San Fermin Find Magic and Common Ground at the El Rey

Last night at the El Rey might’ve been the best night of Red Bull Sound Select’s, 30 days in LA, so far. Even though the lineup was a bit mismatched, Courtney Barnett, San Fermin and Phox all brought something beautiful and completely different to the table. Phox, from Baraboo, Wisconsin not only brought all the small town charm and quick wit that lead singer Monica Martin could muster but they also brought some complex arrangements and made them seamless. There is a great chemistry in this 6 piece band that undoubtedly comes from their long time connection to each other.   They attended the same high school and now all live together in the same house in Madison, Wisconsin. Fresh off a performance on the Conan O’Brien show and a trip to Disneyland, they were the first band to take the stage on Tuesday night and showed us all why comparisons of the band range from Feist to Fever Ray. Any band on this bill could’ve easily headlined the night, including Phox.   Next up was San Fermin. Just wow. San Fermin is the brainchild of composer and keyboardist Ellis Ludwig-Leone; A true prodigy. I didn’t know much about this band
