Offspring is in the Air: Sabroso Taco & Music Fest
We arrived in Dana Point to swarms of sunburnt bros in Black Flag tees just in time for the Adolescents to take the stage. The festival’s audience was starting to accumulate and the free ‘sampler’ beer glasses riddled the grass to indicate festival-goers had already switched to larger cups. It was early and the taco lines started to get backed up, so we hustled to Holy Smoke and got BBQ before we jumped in the pit. It should be noted that after attending at least 20 of these large punk festivals in the past five years, I get as impressed by the food as I do by the performances, and am probably more critical. related content: The Adolescents & The Dickies: Peckerwoods Gone Wild In Orange County Holy Smokes did not disappoint, I’m going to keep an eye out for them next summer. The Adolescents didn’t disappoint either. They’ve had a major resurgence in the past year, bookended by some of their strongest touring in decades and the tragic passing of long time Bassist Steve Soto. Highlights of the Adolescents’ set were their performances of “Who is Who”, which will be turning 40 soon, “Queen of Denial”, and a rare performance

Photo Recap: Iceage and Shame at the Roxy
As part of Goldenvoice’s April series of incredible shows and as one of the many shows to be cobbled together of bands also playing Coachella but touring Los Angeles in between weekends, the Roxy saw an incredible lineup of two bands that dabble in post-punk and garage-punk to each create something wholly their own. I’m talking about Copenhagen’s Iceage and South London’s Shame, two bands known for the intensity and passion of their live performing styles and that’s exactly what you can see in every one of these images. Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Unrequited at Echoplex
As I’ve said previously, emo-trap represents a shift in music that will be mimicked until the whole art form changes. The same repurposing that made it possible for emo to become a one man show is now being used in country with Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” reaching number 1 on the Billboard charts. The virus is spreading. It’s no surprise to me that this ripple effect began with emo simply because at it’s heart, emo is love poetry, and hip hop is poetry. White boys singing about unrequited love while plucking flowers to ask the universe she loves me, loves me not; the power of these sentiments is enough to change the world even if they feel rather weak and lowly when you keep them to yourself. related content: Gothboiclique Represent: Lil Tracy At The Observatory This is evening at the Echoplex was dedicated to emo-trap ala Gothboiclique regulator and Tigers Jaw alumni, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal aka Adam Mcllwee. The night began with Mirsy, a singer with a powerful and mesmerizing voice that floats heavenly atop a hybrid of trap and post punk, as opposed to trap and emo. She was the most goth of the lineup and

It’s Flipper, Faster than Lightning at the Regent
Of all the great punk bands to dance your drunk ass off to, of all the great punk bands for Dads to come out the woodwork and leave their kids with Mom for the night so that they may take off their shirts, boast their hairy chests and muffin tops to, Flipper is the be all, end all. related content: Riot Fest 2018: The Riot Still Rages Celebrating 40 years since the band’s inception as one of San Francisco’s grooviest, grimiest bands, the two remaining original members employed the likes of David Yow (of the Jesus Lizard) to take the microphone and embark on a tour that would reprint the band in every punk’s toxified mind. I arrived at the Regent theater to see veteran San Pedro punk guru Mike Watt and the Missing Men take the stage and wreck it to pieces with some free-form, groovy poetry punk that is still avant-garde a few decades since those cats began playing. They sounded different since the last time I saw them play for Gates to West, the Joe Strummer tribute show, with keyboards instead of guitars, but this off-beat instrumentation served them well to make this set looser and able

Photo Recap: Patriarchy at the Echoplex
If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve been seeing Patriarchy coming up from the underground and making the beginnings of what might become a huge splash in Los Angeles. Patriarchy, the musical brain-child of avant-garde filmmaker and fashionista, Actually Huizenga, is one of the most symbolically powerful acts hitting the clubs right now. Playing with gender roles, Actually takes many forms from princess to warrior and combines their animus in every artistic breath. You’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more from Patriarchy in the near future, so we thought it would be wise to catch her recent Echoplex display of power. Also, check out her films, this artist is part of some new wave of which she is at the forefront. Pics by: Lindsay Arth

JPEGMAFIA, Vince Staples, the Novo, the music blogger, liberals and the CIA ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I’m worried about JPEGMAFIA. Not as a person but more as a concept. See, I’ve spent the last 2 years obsessing on the Black Ben Carson album, almost exclusively. His beats are terrifyingly delicious with almost never a single one of them achieving “banger” status. That would be too cute. No, his sound is one of political and social homicide, with techno kick drums that devour 808’s with distorted resonance, with even bigger promises than that of Bernie Sanders in both the horrifically ambient intros and outros, to single handedly promising to be the pied piper that leads hip hop out of the Drake era. The level of shit talking Peggy achieves on this album is unrivaled in any genre and any medium and even by other JPEGMAFIA albums EP’s or singles. Some have come close or even peaked somewhere near the same point but using his latest and most widely ingested release as an example, the first 4 tracks are straight throwaways that would’ve been better served being used hidden tracks or some other gimmick that allows the listener to focus on a message that seems to be contradicting what both he and critics claim is the meat of

Hell is a Laughing Matter: The Manx at the Hi Hat
If you remember the classic 80’s film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, you’ll know what it feels like to see cartoon characters walking among actual, real life people. That’s what seeing The Manx feels like, like an extreme band all the toons would go see and mosh to. They’re wacky, spontaneous, funny, and deliver a sound and performance like nothing else you could see in Los Angeles or otherwise. Only those versed in cartoon logic will understand the concept of the Manx and luckily every child worth a damn was raised on cartoons. related content: Janky Smooth Top 25 Artists To Watch In 2019 Opening this first night of The Manx’s Tuesday Hi Hat April residency was Drac and the Swamp Rats a band that portrays famous horror movie monsters onstage while playing powerful, groovy rock and roll. They have a garage rock sound and sensibility that the body cannot deny. Even the most cynical hipsters who might scoff at theatrics couldn’t deny music this good. This band doesn’t need to dress up but it definitely adds to the fun and Dracula, the band’s lead singer, plays his character with plenty of sass and irony. Drac’s eyes have witnessed an eternity

Featured Festival: Northwest Terror Fest 2019
Whatever part of the country chooses to host a Terror Fest, flocks of metalheads will follow. These lineups always feature diverse lineups of some of the most extreme bands ranging from grind to doom to death to power metal. Such is the case with Terror Fest’s North Western incarnation, Northwest Terror fest, presented by No Clean Singing, which will host four nights of heavy metal madness with the likes of American power metal legends Cirith Ungol, hailing from Ventura County, one of the best classic metal scenes this country, let alone Southern California has to offer; Pig Destroyer, one of the most socially conscious and unrelenting grind bands for the last decade, and also a pick on our publisher Danny B’s top albums of 2018 with Head Cage; Last of the headliners, legendary Swedish hardcore/crust punks Wolfbrigade are howling into the USA and rounding out this lineup to represent of every kind of extreme music. Northwest Terror Fest takes place May 30th, 31st, and June 1st at three different venues, Neumos, Barboza, and Highline in Seattle, Washington. Tickets for shows at Neumos and Barboza are available here and tickets for after shows at Highline are available for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and Wedensday‘s
