If Anyone Needed A New Year, It’s Me: The Black Lips at The Lodge Room
New Year’s Eve; this is usually when you reflect on the year you’ve had and think about the year that’s about to come. Well my year was shit to say the least. Nothing beats losing a job, your dog getting cancer, and two break ups that bookend 2023. The year to come is uncertain for the first time in my life, and that’s pretty insane to me. With having no job for the first time in 9 years, I finally had an open New Year’s Eve to do something fun. The only thing that stood out to me this year was Cretin Hop’s New Year’s Eve Party with the Black Lips. The Black Lips are one of those bands that I’ve seen over and over and have never been disappointed. So no contest, the Lodge Room was the place to be New Year’s Eve. This was a weird New Year’s, and I think everyone can agree. When traveling around town, it just didn’t feel like there was anything really being celebrated. I started with overpriced drinks in North Hollywood at a ghost town of a bar. I soon realized I was running behind and made my way over to The

Melody’s Echo Chamber at The Lodge Room: Dancing On A Psychedelic Planet
Melody Prochet and her solo project as Melody’s Echo Chamber have always been a much revered group in the world of psych rock since their inception. Able to fuse together so many of vintage rock’s most powerful musical signatures; from disco-dancing to space rock zero-g guitars, the band can just as easily fill an audience with stoner haze, Fleetwood Mac feels or mindblowing bombast at the snap of Melody’s fingers. It wasn’t just the proposition of having your brain melted that mesmerized Los Angeles into selling out three Melody’s Echo Chamber shows at the Lodge Room, these performances were symbolic of much more to the artist herself. related: Desert Daze 2022- 10 Years In the Evolution of a Music Scene If you want to make a comeback, Los Angeles is the best place to make an impact and the Lodge Room is the best venue to ensure sanctuary, spirit and an endless feedback loop of mana between artist and witnesses. Supporting her 2022 album Unfold, Melody’s Echo Chamber was back doing what she does best, and with tears in her eyes and sonic keys of euphoria in her voice, Melody unlocked the minds of every sparkling-rainbow soul inside the Lodge

N8NOFACE at The Lodge Room- F*ck You, Pay Me
The character arch of N8NoFace will one day become the stuff of legend. From making music in a closet to a sold out show at the Lodge Room. From a self described “border boy” growing up in the Sonoran Desert in Tuscon Arizona, to building the kind of cult following in Los Angeles over the last 13 years that is the envy of most religious fundamentalist leaders. After seeing N8’s March 22nd kinetic performance at the Lodge Room in Highland Park, the only question that remains is how far does N8NoFace want to go? Up to this point, I had only seen N8 open for other bands and artists. With just himself and his Roland SP-404, I can’t remember anyone who was able to fill up both big and small stages alike with just themselves, a sampler and a massive stage presence. But this headlining gig at the Lodge Room was a different configuration of people joining him on stage and that made me nervous, at first. When the essence of something you like changes, the changes aren’t always good. For this show, N8NOFACE enlisted the help of Here Lies Man and Antibalas guitarist, Marcos Garcia aka Chico Mann. This

Photo Recap: Wavves at The Lodge Room
Photos by: Taylor Wong Wavves at the Lodge Room is a whole different experience than just any show at the Lodge Room. You get a ticket to see these dudes and you’re bound for a raucous and rowdy punk rock banger where every member is just so loose and stoked that every rendition becomes memorable, somehow walking the line between incredible punk rock and sloppy, drunk shit show. We had Taylor Wong drop in for the show and document this show because there will never be another quite like it. Wavves Harmless Cuffed Up

Trash as a Virtue: Surfbort at the Lodge Room
Dani Miller, lead singer of the band Surfbort walked along the line to admit ticket holders into the Lodge Room moments before the doors opened and the words, “Rainbow Vampires” flashed in my mind. She walked the length of the line, glowing with gratitude, admiring and complimenting people’s mullets, liberty spikes and band t-shirts. A seemingly accidental but extremely willing ambassador to an underground garage/trash punk music scene that lives in venues, on vinyl and is powered by the internet. related content: Surfbort Shake-Up Dave’s Shit Show At Resident This was my second time seeing Surfbort. I knew what to expect and I was excited to see it at the Lodge Room. Not only did Surfbort exceed every expectation with a powerfully energetic, command performance but every band on the bill was well rehearsed and the energy in the room was kinetic, cathartic and joyful. First up was was Shamon Cassette, a departure from the punk vibes of the rest of the evening…or was it? The eccentric MC vibes of Shamon Cassette smacked of Kool Keith/Dr Octagon, both in vocal cadence and eccentricity. The band was more difficult to pigeonhole but no less formidable. People who came to slam dance began

Speaking in Jazz: John Carroll Kirby at the Lodge Room
One of the silver linings of the pandemic is that being deprived all our favorite things for over a year makes us truly cherish them now that they’ve returned. “Don’t know what you got, till it’s gone”, in the Cinderella sense of the adage, applies here, to this John Carroll Kirby concert at the Lodge Room. I use this cliche because we are seeing it play out in real time. John Carroll Kirby‘s was the second artist to sell out the venue since its re-opening and the sort of people that bought tickets and cocktails on this evening weren’t the sort that might attend an experimental jazz show at any previous moment of their lives. Having gone without the spiritual sustenance of music has made all our souls rather emaciated over the last year, so like a vampire that smells human blood, we are fiending live music now more than ever. That’s not to take away anything from the artist, John Carroll Kirby is nothing short of a jazz genius, which in a sense is a genius’ genius. After the first song finished, John took the opportunity to address the crowd and thank us all for coming out. Sharing in

Keys to the Soul: Joep Beving at the Lodge Room Highland Park
Here’s a bit of advice, whenever the Lodge Room puts on an intimate show with seating instead of standing room, buy a ticket no matter who’s playing is because satisfaction is guaranteed. I could tell Joep Beving would put on a transformative show just by seeing his face on a Lodge Room poster. It’s rare I get to see compositions for the piano live, let alone get to review the shows and in this case, from start to finish, the music was beautiful, mournful, even celestial. A good compliment to the sacred feeling of the room. There was something blissful about every note and hallowed about every pause. After a solo performance, Joep brought on Acme Music, a group of four musicians one strings and brass to play with him and together they manifested some of the most powerful and emotional music I’ve ever heard, with swelling peaks and painful lows that brought tears to many eyes in the Lodge Room. Once Acme music was finished, Joep played two more songs for us, one of which was dedicated to his friend Stephen, who died in a freak accident at SXSW a few years ago and the evening’s closing number which

Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow: Funk the Influence at the Lodge Room Highland Park
Words by: William McBee Photos by: Jessica Moncrief Last Saturday began like most weekends do, sleeping in, laying awake, starting the day off slow. I was thinking of how to organize my day and did some mindless scrolling on social media when I came across the flyer for “Funk The Influence” with guest speakers George Clinton and Flea. I asked myself “How could I not go to a symposium featuring the Godfather of Funk and one the greatest bass players of all time?” I pulled the trigger and rushed down to Highland Park to see what all the hype was about. related content: Long Live The Funk: George Clinton And Parliament Funkadelic At The Observatory When I arrived at The Lodge Room, Gorangatang was performing. The duo consisted of a rapper and a didgeridoo player. I enjoyed every second of their deep grooving funky jam. It was my first experience witnessing a didgeridoo and I instantly loved it. The set was followed by a branding panel that included Hairstylist Maisha Oliver, Designer Melody Ehsani and DJ/producer Clinton Sparks. While I was hoping for more music, the conversation between the panelists kept me engaged and intrigued. Clinton Sparks spoke to the audience
