Together Pangea and Prison Affair Tear Up Coachella Side Show at El Rey
In between their Coachella Weekends 1 and 2 sets, Together Pangea and Spain’s Prison Affair stopped off in Los Angeles for a sold-out show at the El Rey Theatre — a sweaty, cathartic night that offered fans a more intimate taste of the chaos they’d just unleashed in the desert. While both bands came with buzz, they offered two very different flavors of punk-adjacent mayhem — one a homegrown institution, the other a rising international cult. Together Pangea has long been synonymous with LA’s garage rock underground. Formed in 2008 when frontman William Keegan began sharing songs from his dorm room, the band quickly found footing in the DIY circuit before crashing through with 2014’s Badillac. Known for their explosive live shows and slacker-meets-sleaze songwriting, they’ve become a staple of Southern California’s indie rock scene — the kind of band that’s always on someone’s “you had to be there” list. And while their El Rey set was classic Together Pangea — wild, gritty, and tight — there was a warmth to it, too. Maybe it’s the fact that Keegan and his partner Kelsey are expecting their first child soon, a new chapter that adds a subtle sense of joy and

Take This: Win Two Tickets to Charlotte Gainsbourg at El Rey
Charlotte Gainsbroug was cut from one of the most talented cloths in music history. From childhood, her artistic career stirred controversy and compelled people to listen to her like flies to a moth. As an actress, she’s one of my favorites, shocking just as many fans with her work with filmmaker Lars Von Trier. Performing a rare show at the El Rey, Charlotte is going to bring cinephiles and francophiles out to the show. YOU CAN BUY TICKETS HERE OR. Photo Recap: Mick Jenkins and Stock Marley at El Rey Theatre
Chicago hip hop sensation, Mick Jenkins, brought his Pieces of a Man tour to the El Rey theatre for a sold out show with support from Stock Marley. The album of the same name as the tour was released in October 2018 so the city came out in force having anticipated this show for awhile. With old school, underground beats that highlight Jenkins’ loose, free, lucid lyrical flow, the fog and vibe at El Rey were of legendary thickness. Photos by: Rodney Campos Mick Jenkins Stock Marley

Windhand Worship at El Rey Theatre
Windhand and Satan’s Satyrs recently played at the El Rey in support of their recently released albums as well as the shared split produced earlier this year. related content: The Protomen: Mega Men On A Mission At The Echoplex Satan’s Satyrs lost some of my attention as they strayed from their most aggressive qualities after releasing Wild Beyond Belief but I found it impossible not to enjoy their performance that night. On display was a more experienced assemblage of the wild hunger they once had: this wasn’t a band trying to prove anything, they were here to shred. It was easy to find appreciation for the new material while witnessing a group that seemed lost (and discovered) somewhere in time between T. Rex and a Hammer horror induced freakout. Clayton Burgess, the group’s leader and bassist, has obviously learned a lot and found a perfect level of comfort on stage after landing the role of the bassist of Electric Wizard. That being said, his bandmates never seem secondary to the balanced performance and their staying power lies in their ability to truly have a sound of their own. related content: Virtually No Dust: Desert Daze 2018 Windhand’s appeal is unique amongst their

The Church of Clutch at El Rey w/Sevendust and Tyler Bryant
Among die-hard Clutch fans, a label which describes most Clutch fans, it’s common to hear the slogan: “Clutch is Church”. The sentiment comes from a deep connection with the band that develops after you see them the first couple times and start sharing memories with people that orbit around their music and shows. There’s something nuanced about why this band generates such loyal fanfare and it can’t just be a consequence of the sound. Having made funky alternative metal blues boogie rock for the last three decades, Clutch’s sound keeps progressing with every album. With this tour coming off the heels of their latest 2018 record Book of Bad Decisions, they seem to be moving into a more rock and roll direction and keeping their alternative metal side more hidden. I don’t mind the change because in today’s musical climate, no other band flies the blues rock flag prouder than Clutch, it’s an important style of rock and roll that must be preserved and Clutch is not only refusing to let it go by the way side, but is expanding on the sound. related content: Neil Fallon Of Clutch Interview: Dog Ears In The Book Of Bad Decisions Combining this blues

Clutch is an American institution. No band captures the dichotomy of this nation quite as well as these country strong but city hip tunes and their new album, Book of Bad Decisions, is only the latest example of just that. I try to see Clutch every time they play in my area, I’ve yet to see them perform “10001110101” live but I feel like the more times I try, the better chances I have. So, I hope to see you there. But how you ask? Without tickets? Well, let us cover those for you. We are giving away two tickets to Clutch’s Book of Bad Decisions show at El Rey with support from none other than Sevendust. F*ck Feelings: Lagwagon Performs “Lets Talk About Feelings” at El Rey
Are we, as a society, officially retiring the adage “sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me”? For a minute there, I thought this was the case but after seeing Lagwagon‘s degenerate onstage horseplay shit on the importance we put on feelings, now I can officially say, we as a society still think feelings are bull shit. Also bullshit: Joey Cape, lead singer of Lagwagon. Ask him yourself, he put it on a T shirt and the damn thing sold out. Fat Wreck Chords is still flying the punk flag proudly. That doesn’t necessarily require being ass holes but it doesn’t hurt, especially when it’s toward your bandmates, not the audience. In all seriousness though, Lagwagon and all its members fucking killed that stage. Lets Talk About Feelings was released twenty years ago on the same night as this show at El Rey. Even back then, Lagwagon’s music was teaching people to be worse human beings, whether they were kids playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater or adults skating in real life. related content: Me First & The Gimme Gimmes Inter-Review At The Fonda Theater A Vulture Wake began the night with one of the tightest,

Take This: Win 2 Tickets To Hercules and Love Affair at El Rey
I can smell a good party and Lethal Amounts always carries the scent. This occasion though is special because Hercules and Love Affair is performing. As a life-long leather bar DJ, Andy Butler knows exactly how to make any dance floor turn up. As a recording artist, he took dance music to new heights whether by putting electronic beats behind the vocals of Anohni or melding disco and techno. This cat has raised the entire game. Then with Lethal Amounts’ beautiful freak show behind the band, this will be an all-out rager to be remembered. Janky Smooth is proud to offer you a chance to party with Hercules and Love Affair for free by offering two tickets to the lucky winner of this contest. YOU CAN BUY TICKETS HERE OR. Nick Urata of DeVotchka Interview: Man on the Street
DeVotchka are hot off the heels of finishing their newest album This Night Falls Forever and touring. This interview with the band’s leader Nick Urata covers everything from film scores to World War 2. RC: At this stage in your career, you and the band have had several successful albums, created or have contributed to several fantastic film soundtracks, and have gained a high levels of regard within both indie and mainstream circles. Despite all of this though, you haven’t been put under the magnifying glass and can still live a more or less normal life doing what you love. In short, have you reached the happy medium of fame? And if so, is it as fulfilling as you hoped it would be? NU: Yes, I feel lucky in this regard. We’ve come to realize that the actual work, is the only thing that is fulfilling. The thrill of fanning a little spark of an idea into a giant fire is what really gets you out of bed. When you’re practicing in your room as a kid you want nothing more than to be famous, but the reality is quite complicated. In my case, I learned how to write from a

Lagwagon have been putting music in its place, playing punk the way it was meant to be played for nearly three decades. In that three decades, the album Lets Talk About Feelings has gone down as one of the band’s most beloved and celebrated recordings. As it’s singer, Joey Cape’s favorite album of the band’s, they will be performing it live in its entirety at El Rey theater on September 22nd. For those of you unfamiliar with the album, maybe you should pop Tony Hawk’s Pro-Skater 2 into your Playstation and listen to “May 16”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLySrcbbWjE Janky Smooth is honored to be giving you punks the chance to win two tickets to the show. A Super Rad Super Kickstarter for The Aquabats Super Show at El Rey
Saving the world is often a thankless job but for over twenty years this has not been the case for The Aquabats. This is a band of superheroes/musicians with a fan base so die hard they not only have their own uniform and vernacular but they pass down their love and admiration for the band to their children. For many kids, those who attend the shows with their parents and those that watch The Aquabats Super Show on television, this band is their introduction not only to punk rock, but to music in general. So how does this fan base show their appreciation to the band? The attendance numbers and longevity speak for themselves but if that’s not enough, the Super Kickstarter seems to be a good metric. Trying to crowd fund new episodes of the Super Show, The Aquabats threw a three hour party at El Rey Theatre that included a slew of amazing guests and bands. Before they even played, The Aquabats announced they had raised enough money to record a new album, so I set my hopes high for new episodes of the Super Show to be on their way. related content: The De-Evolution of Burger Boogaloo
