Clubbing in Paradise: Slayyyter at El Rey

Words by: Danny Ryan Photos by: Ally Gillam Slayyyter’s immersive Club Paradise experience at the El Rey Theatre last week represented a current transformation in what it means to be a pop star. While the genre has long been controlled by mainstream expectations, Slayyyter performs with a defiant attitude along with influences from more alternative music scenes to create an inclusive scene for fans of all walks of life. Pop music is currently in one of the most transformative states that it has ever been in, especially with an underground movement of pop artists incorporating more sounds from avant-garde and experimental electronic genres into the scene. Similar to how punk rock’s sound was rooted in rebellion against the safer styles of rock and roll bands of the 1970’s, independent pop stars like Slayyyter are a resistance to the commercialized sounds of pop music that have been prevalent for far too long. Slayyyter may bring more experimentation to the stage than the casual pop listener is used to, but her dynamic sound and bold personality make her the ideal performer for fans of pop music that are truly obsessed with the genre and its ongoing evolution. related content: ShadowMANcer: Dorian Electra’s

Photo Recap: Amorphis at El Rey

Finland’s Amorphis stopped by the El Rey for the Los Angeles stretch of their North American tour and serenaded the city with their signature blend of anthemic viking balladry and undeniably crushing extreme metal riffage. Showcasing their latest album, 2022’s Halo, Amorphis were a tour de-metal force, with melodic vocals and guttural growls crafting songs about epic adventures and myth. It ain’t everyday this rare heavy metal gem comes to Los Angeles, so we are over the moon to bring you pics from the show. Photos by: Pedro Carrera

Prayers is now synonymous with Leafer Seyer. There is only one true Cholo Goth. This is what has come to pass after his 2022 release, CHOLOGOTH. Leafer is the creative engine behind the art, he is Prayers through and through. Joining him onstage at one point was his better half, Kat Von D. Opening the show was Oddly Shrugs, goth’s latest grungy madman from Los Angeles. Prayers Oddly Shrugs

ShadowMANcer: Dorian Electra’s Hyper Pop Pandemonium at El Rey

Dorian Electra has been one of the hottest tickets in town ever since their 2019 album Flamboyant introduced them to the world as a satirical songstress, non-binary clown, voice for voiceless misfits, and hyper pop visionary. Between then and now, the pandemic severed any chance to see them perform live but for a small handful of shows that I kept on missing. Dorian then released My Agenda in 2020 and all bets were off. Dorian was no longer an underground sensation, they were a pop icon in the making. Canoodling with the likes of Charli XCX, The Village People, The Garden, Grimes and Pussy Riot on tracks and live, they sticking to their roots as they ascend the ladder. In other words, if Dorian wins and goes all the way, they’re taking the underground up with them. For this, the My Agenda Tour, Dorian was playing a parody of a villain that embodied in them the right wing’s biggest boogie man, some kind of hidden puppeteer hellbent on turning the world gay. Dorian, who’s purpose as an artist is to challenge comfort zones and expand boundaries, was ready to wage war. As a music blogger delving into the many undergrounds of

Heavy Metal UFO: Voivod and Revocation at El Rey

Of all the major players of metal, the bands that inspired entire movements and sub-genres, Voivod seemed to be the one I had yet to see perform. Now, having seen them play El Rey, I can’t believe their heavy metal UFO didn’t come across my radar sooner. I always knew them on a surface level, their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Astronomy Domine”, their music videos on Jamey Jasta’s Headbanger’s Ball, and as the band Jason Newsted went to after Metallica. Having learned more about their style of songwriting, their early performances where Snake wore a gas mask, and the incredible virtuosic and outside the box instrumentation of their late guitarist, Piggy; I now think this is one of the most important and essential metal bands of all time. related content: For Every Season Turn, Turn, Turn: Turnover And Turnstile At El Rey The albums Killing Technology and Nothing Face changed progressive and thrash metal, all while sounding like a nuclear war. They made noise simultaneously melodic and metallic and made nonsensical arrangements intriguing. What could be considered odd about this show was that the metal legends weren’t headlining. This bill was vehicle for Revocation’s The Outer Ones album. Revocation and Psycroptic,

Hardcore Hypebeasts at Hell Rey: Scarlxrd at El Rey

As a fan of mixed bills I’ve found myself admiring the output of SCARLXRD, the British youtuber-turned-musician creating an ultra refreshing blend of the soundcloud ethos and hyper aggressive vocals expanding upon the intensity of everything between hardcore and nu-metal. Unfortunately, I missed his initial sold out appearance at The Roxy a few months back but was delighted to be notified of a return to LA at The El Rey. Presented by Goldenvoice, the night far surpassed my expectations moments after Scarlxrd and his infectious hype man took the stage and drove the audience wild. This isn’t anything like the rap-metal of the past critics are so quick to compare it to. There’s a fresh spark in the presentation of everything that perfectly embodies the current state of independent music: the openness and flexibility when blending genres and tones to create catchy yet aggressive tracks that appeal to hardcore kids and hypebeasts alike. related content: Anarchy’s Monarch: Scarlxrd At The Roxy   With so much material released in such little time (seven albums in three years with an eighth scheduled to be released in two weeks) it’s amazing to see how equally received every corner of his catalogue is.
