Scowl at 1720 by David Smith

Scowl At 1720 Sell Out The Venue But Not Their Souls

One of the biggest Catch 22’s of being a punk rock fan is wanting the artists you love to succeed and reach a larger audience, while also wanting them to avoid selling out and the inevitable softening of their edge that comes with popularity. While bands that maintain a consistent sound are often doomed to become dull and uninteresting after a couple of releases, there’s always a lingering fear of bringing in new audiences that don’t “get it” when an artist experiments with new aesthetics or explores other genres. Scowl and Militarie Gun have both had some of the most talked about punk releases of the year, and their recent show at 1720 proved that neither artist has sacrificed their unruly hardcore spirits in the evolution of their sounds. While tough-guy hardcore purists may be complaining online about the alternative direction that these artists have been taking, it’s clear that they haven’t witnessed the chaotic party that Scowl creates up close in-person for themselves yet and it’s only a matter of time before everybody starts to embrace the “Psychic Dance Routine”. related: Scowl Interview- Talking Limp Bizkit, Kevin Smith and Hardcore 1720 has established itself as one of the best

Candlemass at 1720: The Church of Doom

While doom metal is a metal subgenre that has come and gone in waves throughout its history, bands that enter the scene develop such a large cult following that there has never been a need for a huge influx of new artists taking on the sound. The 1980’s severely lacked newer doom metal artists with the oversaturation of hair metal and thrash at the time, but Candlemass boldly took the throne as the Kings of Doom for that era when they were needed most and have maintained their legendary status ever since. With heavier psychedelic rock and metal rising in popularity again, Candlemass have once again returned to Los Angeles for the first time in 6 years for a sold out show at 1720 Warehouse to reclaim their spot on that throne. If you’re in any way a fan of the olden days of heavy metal before blast beats and death growls, seeing Candlemass live is one of the most authentic ways to experience these roots of metal music that are rarely seen nowadays. Anarcho Surf: Osees at 1720

Words by: Danny Ryan Black and White Photos by: Erika Reinsel Color Photos by: Manuel Arredondo Osees’ recent show at 1720 Warehouse embodied the rowdier side of California’s alternative music scene in its purest form. Their signature mixture of garage rock, prog-rock, surf music, punk, and noise rock is brilliantly crafted to contrast between rapidly-paced walls of sound that fill the venue with breaks of blissful psychedelia to provide moments of rest from the chaos. The sold out evening had the energy ramped up to 11 the entire show with no signs of slowing down throughout, even with the Osees’ headlining set being nearly an hour and 40 minutes long. Osees manage to be one of the most experimental live performers to grace the stage, while never sacrificing their loud in-your-face rock n’ roll energy to explore these different sounds. Although 1720 Warehouse was transformed into a rambunctious party for the evening, Osees provide this riotous atmosphere with the avant-garde nature of a fine art piece and blend these two spirits into an absolutely incomparable experience. The opener of the evening was Zig Zags, a garage punk band that bordered on thrash metal at times with their speedy guitar riffs,

Photo Recap: Suffocation at 1720

New York may not be the birthplace of death metal but that region of the United States created a sound so menacing and brutal that the rest of the country couldn’t do a damn thing but cross their arms and look on in horror as bands like Suffocation altered the genre forever. They are and always have been a death metal machine, both in terms of output and longevity and sonically. Their return to Los Angeles, courtesy of Church of the 8th Day and 1720, was a remarkable showcase of true heaviness and death. Everyone was blown away and in awe of Suffocation and we got the pics to prove it. Photos by: Greg Flack Suffocation Atheist Soreption Contrarian

Photo Recap: The Far Side at 1720

What do people mean when they say “alternative” hip hop? I know the artists they reference when they use this term, but what are the themes that run through these MCs and groups? Los Angeles’ Pharcyde were always alternative. They were original, coming with fresh aesthetics no one had ever seen before in their musical direction and videos but at the same time, always celebrating and honoring the roots of hip hop. Pharcyde was mind expanding, a profound and enlightened form of party hip hop that got everyone dancing to soulful beats and bars that didn’t have a shred of negativity in them. Pharcyde lifted the soul. This is why it was so important that the party didn’t stop. The Far Side, composed of Slimkid3, Imani, and Fatlip, knew their purpose as a group was to celebrate life through the medium of hip hop. Ironically, the group’s reunion was sparked out of the grief that came after Imani’s grandmother passed away, inspiring him to give Slimkid3 a call after they hadn’t spoken for years. The past was put behind them for the greater good and as they tour the country, they’re spreading that greater good everywhere they go. So yes,

Return to Reign: Sound and Fury Presents Terror and Strife at 1720

How crazy is it that it’s been three years since the last Sound and Fury? Here was this festival that acted as a living metaphor for eternal youth and summer love, and then it got suspended by lockdowns that in essence froze people’s minds from maturing while their bodies very much got three or five or ten years older over the pandemic. Still though, the relevance of the bands that made Sound and Fury so special haven’t been diminished one bit since they demolished the Belasco. Mindforce and Dead Heat are still the young princes in this kingdom. Meanwhile, Terror and Strife are still kings. related content: L.A.’s Best Festival is Sound And Fury (imo). Here’s Why: Dead Heat opening a hardcore show must mean there’s some kind of killer lineup ahead. Usually, this band is either the closer or direct support, brought out as some kind of secret weapon to really get the festivities popping off, but this show was almost a mini-festival, and the pits needed to be wild right from the jump, so who better than Ventura County’s own nardcore royalty, Dead Heat? Nobody’s better, that’s who. related content: Boston Calling: Sound And Fury 2019 Legendary New

Hardcore Disco: HEALTH at 1720

Words by: Danny Ryan Photos by: Manuel Arredondo Health’s record release show at 1720 Warehouse was an excellent demonstration of their ability to incorporate the widest-array of contrasting sounds and emotions into their artistic vision. Their dedication to breaking ground in the incorporation of these genres was on full display, from the diversity of the crowd to the band’s ambitious blend of industrial, noise, goth, synth, metal, hardcore punk and shoegaze influences blasting throughout the venue. With their new album “Disco4: Pt. 2” comprising of different guest features on every track, Health proves that their signature style can collaborate with any artist without straying away from sounding like themselves. This show was an ideal celebration for the release of this new album. Even with most of the set being comprised of their solo works, Health is presenting their fusion of these genres in a powerful manner. Health always distinctively sounds like Health, no matter which artists they are featuring or taking influence from. From an outsider’s perspective, it would have been very difficult to discern which genre of music they would be seeing that night. Mesh tops and leather outfits evoking industrial style could be seen throughout the venue, as
