MSPAINT is a four‑piece band formed in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 2019. Its members include mononymous vocalist Deedee, synth player Nick Panella, bassist Randy Riley, and drummer Quinn Mackey. Notably, the group intentionally avoids guitars—opting instead for a lineup of vocals, synth, bass, and drums, a decision that underpins their unique sound.
They debuted with a self‑titled EP in March 2020, during the early pandemic, which gradually built their underground momentum. Their first full‑length album, Post‑American, arrived on February 20, 2023 via Convulse Records. Produced by Ian Shelton (of Militarie Gun) and Taylor Young, it combines retro synths, aggressive rhythms, powerful bass, and hopeful, politically charged lyrics. Critics praised its blend of post‑hardcore intensity and experimental electronic textures, leading to “post‑modeM” being coined for their style .
Recent News (2025)
In April 2025, MSPAINT announced No Separation, a new five‑track EP scheduled for release on May 23, 2025, via Convulse Records. The EP was co‑produced by members of Show Me The Body—Julian Cashwan Pratt and Harlan Steed—alongside Nick Panella . The lead single, “Angel,” released on April 29 with a Matrix‑inspired music video directed by Alex Thiel, showcases autotuned vocals and brighter melodic elements—a “poppier” direction, according to Deedee .
Shortly before the EP dropped, the second single “Drift” came out on May 19, 2025 . Critics received No Separation positively—for instance, Pitchfork rated it 7.7/10, noting its urgent synth‑punk aesthetic that merges activism and optimism
