Photo Recap: Citizen at The Regent

For two sold out nights, Citizen treated Los Angeles’ softer side with post hardcore maladies and sweet serenades that left an eternal impression upon the Regent walls. Alongside Militarie Gun and Prince Daddy & The Hyena, this was a showcase that proved hardcore is for lovers, or at least fighters that fight for love. Photo Recap: Clutch, Quicksand, and Helmet at the Regent

Sometimes a tour comes around town that is so stacked it’s hard to believe when you first see the marquee. Such was the case when The Regent hosted Clutch, Quicksand, and Helmet. Each of these bands could headline a show and gather a crowd but all together, this has got to be one of the best alternative metal hardcore tours of the year. All three bands dabble in all three sounds and their audiences aren’t too far apart if you ask me. Although it’s a lineup that’s hard to believe this lineup makes a lot of damn sense. These bands come from different places and scenes, they all got different histories but it’s all rock and roll. We’ve got pics from the show that you gotta see. A Night at the Pantheon With Of Montreal at The Regent

With the recent release of their new album Freewave Lucifer f<ck f^ck f>ck, Of Montreal was ready to unleash their immersive sound onto the stage and illustrate the stories found here and within their deep and illusive discography. Teetering the line between a performance art and a live music can be tough to accomplish but what Of Montreal have done not only shatters expectations but also blurs the line between the two to take each to a different level. Joined by a supporting cast of characters, the Athens based indie art-pop group was able to put on a spectacle that captured the essence of why they have maintained somewhat of a cult following. Locate S,1 brought a funk-fueled electro-disco inspired set that had the crowd groovin’. The band, fronted by Christina Schneider, was the perfect bridging the gap into the main act, providing a space to let loose and feel the grooves. As the time grew near and in the most theater inspired fashion, the band came out with an emcee wearing a lucha mask, giving a rousing introduction and lay out of the criteria for the night. What stood out was their proclamation for everyone to challenge all norms

Feeling Supernatural: Turnover at the Regent

Words by: Alfredo Luna Photos by: Dave Unbuckled On the back of two brand new singles, Turnover took to the stage on the first night of their sold out 2 show run at The Regent. The band has always felt like it had a kaleidoscope of sound with their music revolving and hopping from genre to genre. This varied assortment of sound brought a diverse mix of fans out. With the release of their newer stuff and the limited West Coast run they had announced, it was hard to guess how they were going to sound or what they were going to play, the hype in the line and in the venue turned into full on speculation of what we thought was going to be played as well as the classic debate of old stuff versus new. Regardless of what was in store for us, we were all ready to experience one of the more unique discographies on display that night. related content: For Every Season Turn, Turn, Turn: Turnover and Turnstile at El Rey Kicking off the night we were treated to the NorCal based Healing Potpourri which brought an easy listening lounge vibe to the stage. Photo Recap: Nasty Savage at the Regent

Thrash metal’s most hardcore band, Nasty Savage returned to the Regent to decimate the stage with their heavy metal, extremely violent and outrageous antics. We had to be there to capture the insanity and beyond the amazing performances from Hirax, Witchaven, Saintbreaker and EvilDead, Nasty Savage tore shit up as brutally as you’d expect. Nasty Ronnie was on the ground after his TV stunt, leaving debris everywhere. It’s a shocking scene that requires documentation and we caught all the nasty evidence on film. The Envy of Angels: Lingua Ignota at the Regent

Participating in church is a form of mass formation. A sort of collective insanity, reaching a fever pitch with the right pied piper at the pulpit, leading their congregation through a wild purging of trauma and fear through sermon, song or speaking in tongues until catatonic tremors. It’s a necessary escape from sanity. Many of the people that attended Lingua Ignota have left their churches or been shunned by them but found a home among outcasts that feel Lingua Ignota’s music makes them feel like they’re in the graces of God but not under the eyes of his judgement. These people may not have an organized religion anymore but they still need spiritual guidance and leadership. Lingua Ignota fills that void. Her style of music represents a new, secular religion, scary to some, but by tapping into holy notes and chambers of her vocal cords, she is able to produce that same elusive, overwhelming and rapturous feeling of being in the presence of the sacred. Humans need myth and metaphor, which she conjures in songs like “MAN IS LIKE A SPRING FLOWER” as well as the knowledge of their acceptance, eluded to in songs like “FAITHFUL SERVANT FRIEND OF CHRIST”.

Garage Punk Homecoming: Together Pangea at the Regent

Words and Photos by: Alfredo Luna There will always be bands and music that exists that will bring up something nostalgic in you, taking you back to a certain time and place. A lot of us can say we’re seeing that being presented whether through the lens of “Indie Sleaze” movement or the emo revival phase we have going on. But the one that truly got me was listening to Together Pangea again and being taken back to when I was still in high school coming into my own and somehow discovering through word of mouth, When their Night of the Living Dummy album found its way to my speakers it instantly transformed my taste in music. I distinctly remember videos from their live shows popping up on my feed and a ton of show posters plastering my digital space. I’d always told myself that I needed to make it out and support this up and coming band but as fate would have it I just never could make it. That is until I saw they’d be making a triumphant return to LA with their show at The Regent, and I just knew I had to satisfy that musical pilgrimage

Gen X Drip: Mudhoney and Meat Puppets at The Regent

Words by: Danny Ryan Photos by: Jessica Moncrief Mudhoney’s recent headlining show with Meat Puppets at the Regent Theater was an excellent celebration of the early roots of late 1980’s alternative music scenes that would later branch off into genres such as indie rock and grunge music. While both artists are vastly different in their sounds and aesthetics, they both represent an era of major expansion in the influences seen in the 80’s punk scene while maintaining its DIY ethics and aesthetics. While 90’s artists like Nirvana are often credited as the first to break down boundaries in the mainstream perspective of independent music scenes by bringing more variation into punk rock’s sound, there was an entire community of artists in the late 80’s responsible for exploring ways of transforming punk into a more diverse genre. With 1980’s culture having a large emphasis on the celebrity-like fanfare that rock stars and pop singers received during the period, bands like Mudhoney and Meat Puppets were crucial in creating spaces for artists that wanted to place more importance in their passion for independent music rather than the ego-driven attitudes seen in other rock scenes of the time. related content: TGIFETUS: Dying Fetus
