Angelyne: Billboard Queen, Punk Diva & Archetype Of The L.A. Dream

One great thing about living in Southern California is that seemingly everyone you meet is here with specific creative goals in mind- that experience MAY be magnified if you yourself have your own dreams of creative success or recognition since, obviously there are MILLIONS of people who live here that are just living their lives everyday just like any other city in the world.  All things being equal, you may randomly end up befriending a transplant swedish waitress, only to find out she’s actually a screenwriter or even end up becoming friends with a famous local on any given day or night of the week.  It’s part of the LA charm that I have come to love so much. I recently met billboard queen, Angelyne through a friend when I was invited to join them for dinner at El Coyote. Like many, she was instantly recognizable to me, even though I didn’t know much about her. But after meeting her, I was compelled to find out as much as I could. Over the course of the last month or so I have been able to get to know her more though our conversations. What I have learned has given me a

Bullies or Buddies: Los Angeles Music Blogs and the Scenes They Cover

A solid three years into the game, COOL TITE bring it fresher and bigger than ever. Crystal, Mat, and Sergio are all about keeping it D.I.Y. and Janky Smooth wants to acknowledge and participate in how local music blogs in LA, like CT, contribute to and enrich the community, stay connected to share what music we’re all digging at the moment and to tell music fans more about when the music from that band you love is set to be played at a show, at your favorite venue nearby, or when they are releasing new music.  Without confirming with COOL TITE directly that they feel the same way, I know the people at Janky Smooth feel like they are an extension of the sounds emitting from the city and collaborators of sorts that prop up the scene and some of the bands in it. When I use the word “collaborate” it’s not to insinuate that the BEST blogs work in conjunction with bands as a promotional arm- no.  Leave that to Pitchfork or COS.   related: Mind Meld Mondays at The Echo Continue Bringing Highest Value The collaboration is to relay the straight dope, raw dog like a conversation with

Flames of Durga at The Satellite

Flames of Durga EP Release at The Satellite Continues Long L.A. Tradition

The L.A.music scene has been forever shaped and altered by the influence of strong female musicians. Flames of Durga is heavily influenced by the underground feminist Riot Grrrl movement, which led to their relationships with the other bands that played the EP release party. Rock and Roll history is rife with talented siblings and it’s not a coincidence that siblings compose and perform well in collaboration with one another. AC/DC’s Malcolm and Angus Young, Tegan and Sara, Alex and Eddie Van Halen and especially Heart’s Ann & Nancy Wilson are all fair comparisons to the firepower trio Flames of Durga. The group is charmingly fronted by twin sisters Cecilia and Beah who are accompanied by Nate Million on drums. The Satellite on Silverlake Boulevard hosted the EP release party where Flames of Durga shared the stage with other female-fronted rock bands before the sister’s first tour kicks off. related content: 2 Nights of The Julie Ruin At The Roxy- All Girls To…The Back Bar Stars At Night, an all-female rock group from East L.A. plays centered around their percussionist Joana Rubio. She plays like thunder and with driven consistency through the 80’s-inspired synth rock. Joana noted after the set that she

Printed Matter- LA Art/Book Fair

The LA Art/Book Fair with Thurston Moore and Ho99o9

Los Angeles- our Art, Literature, Music, Culture and Tacos Can No Longer Be Easily Dismissed L.A. is in the midst of a renaissance.  While most might call it gentrification, those people are not in the trenches that are being filled with artists, students, activists, authors and poets.  While Manhattan and even Brooklyn are becoming more inaccessible to artists without extensive investment portfolios, the geography of Los Angeles allows those with small bank accounts and big ideas to fan out east and still be within the city and county limits of L.A.  While the former glory, grit, angst, junkies, music scenes and yes, stank of Hollywood and The Sunset Strip have been replaced with chain night clubs, over priced eateries, spruced up sceneries and former botox beauty queens, Echo and Highland Park, East L.A., Boyle Heights and even the former toilet bowl known as Downtown Los Angeles are overflowing with housing, lockout rehearsal studios and concrete, commercial structures that house painters and nihilistic youth.  Idealism abounds and there is even more real estate further east that can support small budgets and big dreams, at least until the day that LA is swallowed by the Pacific Ocean. Los Angeles has always gotten a bad
