Tyler’s Camp Flog Gnaw Year 10 Intersects w/ Chromakopia Number 1
A long hike up the hills of Elysian Park is a small price to pay for the view from the top. Three massive stages situated in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium and boasting a wildly impressive hip-hop centric lineup, Camp Flog Gnaw celebrated its 10 year anniversary this past weekend and sold out well in advance, and the lineup wasn’t even announced until a month before the festival. related content: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Camp Flog Gnaw 2019 From legendary acts to tributes, DJ sets and soulful serenades, Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival is a uniquely curated exhibition of mainstream and underground artists, youth culture and untethered creative expression. The fan engagement and level of commitment to the art is evident in the way the incoming fans have chosen to dress. It’s early November and we’re up on a hilltop so everyone is a bit bundled up knowing that once the sun goes down it’ll be about as cold as Los Angeles is willing to tolerate. Workwear, faux fur and puffer jackets are out which would make a New Yorker giggle to see how dramatic we are about the shift into cooler weather. Among the masses it’s

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Camp Flog Gnaw 2019
IMAGES COURTSEY OF GOLDENVOICE The Good: Camp Flog Gnaw 2019 was curated with artists that challenged everyone’s concept of what a live performance could be. Boundary expansion is what this festival and crowd have always been about and this year was not only no different from the past but an outlier after such stellar performances like that of FKA Twigs, Tyler, the Creator, and Thundercat. Also, with the festival at Dodger Stadium, the view of the downtown skyline is a constant reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful city as Los Angeles. The Bad: Many of the artists who were billed high atop the lineup were actually unimpressive live. Listening to their sets felt like slogging through the minutes in anticipation of the few acts people truly cared about. So, this year the lineup was under-billed and a few of the names it did have were nothing special. The Ugly: Generation’s Z and their reaction to Drake being revealed as the surprise guest are ugly. It was a moment that validated many bad conclusions drawn about young people in 2019. Entitlement and bad manners mainly. I wanted to see Frank Ocean too but I’ll be damned

Camp Flog Gnaw 2015: Beats, Beefs and Building Your Brand
As I entered Exposition Park for the next annual installment of Camp Flog Gnaw, I was consumed by visions of khaki’s and polo shirts. Many attendees resembled prep school students more than the stereotypical image of hip hop fans. There was very little evidence of “hip hop past” and it’s baggy clothing, ironed creases and crisp snap backs. Rapper, producer and entrepreneur Tyler, The Creator continues to create the entire Camp Flog Gnaw world in his own image, with a tireless output and an ever evolving sound and aesthetic, fans are buying in; big time. But to say that it’s “all about the music” would be disingenuous. If the contemporary artists’ financial success were solely based on their music then Tyler wouldn’t be such a standout powerhouse (being the best isn’t enough). With streaming music services and P2P sites making album sales almost irrelevant, acts like Tyler, the Creator and indie bands like The Growlers with their “Beach Goth” festivals are at the forefront of building the new music industry. No, even with artists like Snoop, Atmosphere and Living Legends on the bill, this festival was not about the past. This festival was not about the future. This festival wasn’t

Tyler, the Creator announces new album and shares music video
Tyler, the Creator hasn’t gone anywhere. Two years since dropping Wolf , he took to Twitter last night to announce just what he’s been up to all these months. He’s releasing his newest album Cherry Bomb, launched an offical app called Golf Media and now even has a magazine, Golf Magazine. “Fucking Young/Perfect” and “Deathcamp” are two tracks already posted to SoundCloud, with a music video for “Fucking Young/Perfect” up as well. The lengthy video features Tyler doing what Tyler does best: messing around in LA while of course trying to get the girl. Watch the video above and check out the pitched-up SoundCloud versions of both songs. Pre-odering the album will also let you download the official versions of “Deathcamp” and “Fucking Young.” Cherry Bomb also features a range of collaborators, from Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bundick to Cole Alexander of Black Lips.
