Oneohtrix Point Never at The Wiltern by Abraham Preciado

Oneohtrix Point Never at The Wiltern: Post-Post-Modern Music

Oneohtrix Point Never at the Wiltern wasn’t an ordinary concert — it was a creative breakthrough into a new form we were all indulged in. I remember being in a film class about postmodernism and asking my professor what movement was supposed to come after. The professor’s answer was “hyperreality”, which — if you’re familiar with it from painting — is a style that almost perfectly maps onto the real world… almost. Although it’s a bit difficult to imagine what hyperreality looks like in music or performance, Oneohtrix Point Never’s show at The Wiltern was an experimental leap ahead of postmodernism, and either a sidestep from hyperreality or a pastiche of it. During the show, a live puppeteer mimicked Oneohtrix Point Never’s performance, with the puppet’s antics projected live on a screen behind OPN. Seeing the duality between man and puppet provided layers of meaning to OPN’s performance, making it an autobiography in the form of a concert. For those not in the know, Oneohtrix Point Never is the pen name of electronic musician, producer, and film composer Daniel Lopatin. His rise to acclaim came in increments before his signature sound became undeniable — notably when featured in Safdie Brothers

Negative Spaces In A Hyper Poppy Atmosphere At The Wiltern

Poppy is certainly an anomaly in the heavy music world, almost resembling an overall brand or abstract concept more than just a simple musician as she further blurs the line between influencers and artists. While many people are familiar with her through her days of bizarre Youtube videos where she took on the role of a robotic AI humanoid spouting nonsense, she has come a long way from the novelty of being a subject for reaction videos and has really proved herself as a refreshing forward-thinking figure in heavy metal. Fresh off of her newest album “Negative Spaces” and recent collaborations with Knocked Loose and Bad Omens; Poppy brought her blend of bubblegum catchy melodies, glitchy industrial effects, and brutal metalcore breakdowns to The Wiltern for a night of pure chaotic poppy energy. With Los Angeles being the last date of this tour, Poppy went all out in transforming The Wiltern into her own signature bizarre, twisted world that converted any stubborn metalhead in the room to a believer in her vision for the genre’s future. related: Different Shades of Black and Blue – Knocked Loose at 1720 The opening act Chinese American Bear was an interesting choice for the

Yves Tumor at The Wiltern: Living in the Abstract

Yves Tumor took the stage On October 12th at The Wiltern in Los Angeles to give us a performance as eccentric and memorable as they are. This four piece experimental rock band can hardly be tied to one genre, making their sound something we’ve never heard before. They have carefully crafted their entire brand to be so abstract and artistic so that their audience can imprint vastly different parts of themselves onto any piece. Yves Tumor is an art piece first and musician second. Yves Tumor is a specialist at guiding the imagination. Every song feels like looking through a kaleidoscope; you can see what you think the image is, but you never really know. Their lyrical way of montaging concepts into eccentric metaphors are what attract a following of abstract artists and creatives. This mixed with their ominous industrial rock sounds make all of their music sound intensely deep and intimate. A common theme throughout any Yves Tumor piece is the connection between religious subtext and everyday life. In their latest album, “Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot between Worlds)” we hear a lot of key phrases and buzzwords in the titles

Welcome to Hell, Black Country, New Road and Black Midi at The Wiltern

This was definitely a night of two emerging heavyweights, in Black Country, New Road and Black Midi. Both bands have similarly exploded into the scene and have been at the forefront of the Post-Brexit New Wave movement, representing two sides of that same coin. Each has a unique and dynamic sound that’s amassed a cult-like following and together they packed in every square inch of The Wiltern. With this being the first time BCNR have played LA after a last minute cancellation of their US tour earlier this year due to the departure of Isaac Wood from the band, this felt like it was a must see show just to see them make their LA debut. Add into the mix that Black Midi would be headlining this leg of the tour after their release of the latest album, Hellfire and you just knew this would be a gig for the ages. Getting to the gig, you could see the excitement and restlessness of everyone that showed up, with people lining the street, anxious to get in so they didn’t miss opener BCNR. Seeing people run in the theater as soon as they stepped in was indicative of how sought after

Berlin’s most powerful electronic trio, Moderat are the supergroup on the lips of everyone that loves deep electronic beats, whether they love to dance or just vibe to the overwhelming music they create. Photo Recap: Parquet Courts at the Wiltern

Words and Photos by: Erika Reinsel If there’s one band who I never tire of seeing, hands down it is Parquet Courts. With every album, the New York quartet continue to find new ways to expand their sound. In support of their latest release, Sympathy of Life, Parquet Courts rolled through The Wiltern in LA. The band remained silhouetted in front colored lights that rolled across the backdrop, letting the music speak for itself. The set started with a mix of hits from Sympathy of Life and 2016’s Human Performance. Much to the delight of old school Parquet Courts fans, the band even treated the crowd to a few songs off their breakthrough album Light Up Gold.  Parquet Courts never pin down to a specific sound, which probably explains why their crowd is a mix of young and old; fans of music from punk to dance; and why their shows are always packed and never disappoint.   Setlist: Application / Apparatus Human Performance Dust Almost Had to Start a Fight / In and Out of Patience Freebird II Marathon on Anger Watching Strangers Smile Zoom Out Walking at a Downtown Pace Wide Awake Plant Life Light Up Gold II Homo

Drugs Music: The Brian Jonestown Massacre at the Wiltern

“Drugs Music” is the umbrella term for the sounds created by The Brian Jonestown Massacre in Anton Newcombe’s own words. He didn’t specify whether this meant the music was the drug or that the music was meant to be enjoyed on drugs, but both are true. Seeing the Brian Jonestown Massacre live is like barreling down a tunnel of infinite and psychedelic love with kaleidoscope colors changing like LSD-friendly chameleons as flower petals shower you in hippie kisses. They’ve harnessed some kind of psych rock induced hypnosis that transports you back in time (or rather through dimensions) to a place sorta like the 60’s where there’s boundless amounts of free love and exquisite weed, friendly vagabonds and outlaws roam about and warmly say hello to everyone they encounter, but it’s a 60’s without all the bloated pontification, the vibe here is much more real. Just go with the flow, that’s the mantra of the music. This show made me feel loose and always connected to that Godly flow instead of being caught in a mental web by useless thoughts that restrict one’s actions and worldview. Someone who just lets the flow dictate their actions all the time without the weight

The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Fire Doesn’t Grow on Trees Tour Rolls up to the Wiltern

One of the world’s most iconic modern psychedelic rock bands, The Brian Jonestown Massacre are returning to Los Angeles for a tour stop at the Wiltern meant to melt their audience only after they’re tripping too hard to stop it from happening. That’s right, Anton Newcombe and his wild bunch are bringing retro psychedelia back with a vengeance. Having released two new singles, “The Real” and “Where Do We Go From Here?” earlier this year off their upcoming album titled Fire Doesn’t Grow on Trees, the band is geared up and ready to deliver all the best elements of BJM from hazy grooves, explosive rhythms, walls of sound, face melting fuzz, and drone for daze. With support from Mercury Rev, Friday night at the Wiltern is set to bring the LA psyche community out in droves and leave them totally wasted but happy.
