The Garden Summon Ghosts at The Observatory For One Strange Night In Orange County

“One Strange Night in Orange County” wasn’t just a festival facilitated by The Garden, an experimental rock duo of twin brothers from Orange County. It was a flashback to a time not that long ago when The Observatory was overrun by Burgeramas and Beach Goths and other festivals past. The Garden certainly were not headlining those days but they were stealing the show. Now, here they are- the last vestige of a canceled culture. 2 boys turned elder statesmen who survived the purge by not letting their erupting hormones and exploding status lead them down the path of personal and professional ruin. But on this One Strange Night in Orange County, the spirit of those days was in the air. Not to haunt us but to honor the magic of both the music of that time and the diversity of music that came before and after they died. related: Beach Goth 4- The Party of the Year The festival started by honoring the past 45 Grave are a four piece, goth/death rock band from the 80’s. They opened the festival and couldn’t have done a better job at setting the tone for what seemed like Halloween all night long.

It’s Not Dead Fest 2: New Hope For Punks w/ Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, OFF!

It had been two years since the first It’s Not Dead festival (which boasted punk rock legends such as The Descendents, Pennywise and Bad Religion) and the bar was set pretty high for its return. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get off work until 2 pm on that day but even by that morning nobody knew what the set times were going to be as the festival’s curators refused to release them until the minute doors were open at noon. A decision that I found somewhat annoying but I understood it encouraged people to arrive early to see as many bands as possible. As soon as I was able to see the schedule I was disappointed to discover that there was no way I was going to make it to the Glen Helen Amphitheater in San Bernardino in time to catch The Flatliners’ 3 pm start time. Cutting my losses, I hit the road after swinging by my house to grab my gear and change into more festival friendly clothes in hopes of arriving before The Buzzcocks took the stage later in the afternoon. related content: Punk Rock Bowling 2017: You Can’t Be What You Were

Reverend Horton Heat, The Adicts and The Smut Peddlers at The Observatory

Last night I remembered why I used to hate Orange County. The reminder came in the form of an awesome show with a diverse lineup that featured Reverend Horton Heat, The Adicts, The Smut Peddlers and Sean and Zander. It drew the type of crowd one might’ve seen at punk shows in the 80’s and 90’s with all it’s assorted tribes and politics. All the punk rock crews were represented from UNITY skins and SHARP’s and I even had some interactions with an old school dude reppin the L.A.D.S. But this is Orange County afterall and it just wouldn’t be a punk show in the O.C. if there weren’t a huge Nazi Skin contingent present to guard the Mother Land from invading brown people. The fact that The Smut Peddlers were on the bill brought the South Bay Skins even further south than the South Bay to add to the already hearty skinhead stew. But times are different and even with a group of people that would’ve blown like an over heated pressure cooker in a different decade, I witnessed no real violence last night.
