Tom Verlaine- Television

Television Performing “Venus” at Bunkhouse Saloon for PRB Club Show

It’s hard to believe that yet another Punk Rock Bowling is in the books but the week long hangover proves it.  The Stern brothers book yet another legendary gig with Television headlining the Bunkhouse Saloon along with The Weirdos, Alice Bag and The Avengers.   Tom Verlaine and company were water tight at their PRB 2017 club show. This isn’t the first time Janky Smooth is covering the pioneers of punk and art rock but it was certainly one of the most memorable.  The club shows at Punk Rock Bowling always seem to produce some of the best performances in the most intimate settings.  Other notable club gigs at PRB 2017 that we attended were Cocksparrer at Backstage Bar, Municipal Waste at Fremont Country Club, Hepcat at Bunkhouse Saloon and The Vandals, also at Fremont CC. related content: Patti Smith “Horsin’ Around” at The Teragram Ballroom Television Set List- Bunkhouse Saloon Prove It Little Johnny Jewel Venus 1880 or So Persia I’m Gonna Find You Marquee Moon For those of you attending Punk Rock Bowling installments in Denver and/or Asbury Park, have a great time.  Janky Smooth will see you next year in Vegas.   Full recap of Punk Rock

Desert Daze 2016: Quantifying the Physics Of A Good Time

It has been a common sentiment amongst those that I’ve questioned about their time at Desert Daze 2016, that it was the most meaningful festival experience they’ve ever had. Same question. Same answer. Young, old, audiophiles, casual music fans, frequent festival attendees and those that loathe the format. Almost every person I spoke to this weekend gave me a variation of the same answer to my question- “Desert Daze 2016 is the best festival I’ve ever been to. And no, I can’t quite explain what it is or what makes me feel that way.”  But given that I’m a writer and my actual purpose here is to attempt to take a photograph of this festival with my words, I will make an attempt to do so.  My fear is that attempting to quantify the sentiments could steal some of it’s magic, almost like the Native American belief that if someone takes a photograph of you, it steals a piece of your soul. How would you describe the onset of love or a faith in G-d or religious ideology- It just is. And if you’re saying to yourself that is a bit over the top or hyperbolic, you’re right.. To describe the how or the why,

Television is Flawless at The Teragram Ballroom

Tom Verlaine and Co. casually walked onto the stage as if they were walking into their practice space. They picked up their weapons, turned on their amplifiers and took a good 3 minutes, casually confirming that their instruments were indeed in tune, seemingly oblivious to the fact that there was a sold out crowd standing right in front of them at The Teragram Ballroom. We were there to see their band Television play, most of us for the first and most likely, the last time. This was a momentous occasion even though 99.999999 percent of the world doesn’t know about them or their band. Almost every self respecting music lover is aware of a place called CBGB and the art that erupted out of that tiny, urine soaked corner of the world. It’s one of the places that the word Punk was defined and it’s also the place that it first became misunderstood because by today’s standard, the band Television doesn’t fit the narrow definition. Blondie, Talking Heads, The Ramones, Patti Smith, The Dead Boys and The Cramps (just to name a few), all CBGB bands that had a different sound but a similar spirit of independence. They were given
