We had Paige Vreede out to review the fledgling festival, Josh Allen out to shoot the bands and the people and Danny Baraz threw down a DJ set outside on patio of The Echo. It is the position of Janky Smooth that Fishbone is the greatest live band of the past 3 decades. In any measurable way, Fishbone plays, connects with their audience, records their material and of most importance recently, ages better than any band that typically has people slam dancing to their music. With the recent return of original drummer Philip “Fish” Fisher, Fishbone is closest to their original lineup than they have been in over a decade. To be honest, having ex Suicidal Tendencies guitarist, Rocky George and trombonist and frequent mid-air projectile, Flyin’ Jay filling in for any missing O.G’s isn’t exactly any type of sacrifice for a band. “There is one thing that you can always count on at a Fishbone show- They will never mail it in. Being the pre-eminent garage rock festival requires that someone transform the lo-fi sound worshipped by it’s lovers into a minimal visual aesthetic, at least by today’s music festival standards. A modern minimalism that doesn’t lose that fact that the ruffles and confetti of a senior prom or the tiki torches and teen taboo of a backyard party were over the top, once upon a time. After 7 years, Burger Boogaloo and it’s home in Mosswood Park have achieved that “just right” aesthetic that hits all the right notes in the lineup and it looks like it will do so again on July 1st and 2nd, 2017 in Oakland, California. What Burger Boogaloo does so well is that it achieves a familiarity and comfort without being too redundant. With John Waters becoming a welcome permanent fixture as master of ceremonies, two consecutive years of The Mummies were just what we needed. Omitting them from this year’s lineup was just as necessary as booking them twice and adding the likes of Iggy Pop, Buzzcocks and X achieved an exponentially wider net of legacy being cast without losing that trashiness that a couple bigger name acts could bring when patrons wearing indian head dresses

The Orwells are coming to the Observatory in Orange County this Friday, March 24th. The Orwells are one of the most badass young live bands in rock n roll right now. Every element in authenticity is present in their live set. Air tight band and sloppy, blacked out dispositions that mouth whore around the venue on any given night. When their sophomore album, Disgraceland dropped in 2013, it solidified them the “real deal”- appealing to legions of discerning indie hipsters and vapid mainstream mass appealers alike. Dick Dale is singlehandedly responsible for the entire genre of surf rock. With the HUGE resurgence of the style that is taking place in garages all over the world, it’s important to know it’s roots. Through the 50’s to the present day, his playing is so unique and loud that Leo Fender worked to develop the first ever 100 watt amplifier named the Fender Dual Showman Amp, made specifically for Dick Dale, “The King of Surf Guitar”. At 78 years old, Dick Dale must keep playing shows or he’ll die; literally. In a recent July 29th interview with the Pittsburgh City Paper, Dick Dale revealed that he continues to tour aggressively to “pay for medical patches and pouches” that help him not only live more comfortably after two bouts of rectal cancer, renal failure and severely damaged vertebrae but to get enough of the medical supplies that allow him to sustain his life. That doesn’t stop Dick Dale from shredding that Fender Stratocaster more viciously than anyone on planet earth.
