Speaking in Jazz: John Carroll Kirby at the Lodge Room
One of the silver linings of the pandemic is that being deprived all our favorite things for over a year makes us truly cherish them now that they’ve returned. “Don’t know what you got, till it’s gone”, in the Cinderella sense of the adage, applies here, to this John Carroll Kirby concert at the Lodge Room. I use this cliche because we are seeing it play out in real time. John Carroll Kirby‘s was the second artist to sell out the venue since its re-opening and the sort of people that bought tickets and cocktails on this evening weren’t the sort that might attend an experimental jazz show at any previous moment of their lives. Having gone without the spiritual sustenance of music has made all our souls rather emaciated over the last year, so like a vampire that smells human blood, we are fiending live music now more than ever. That’s not to take away anything from the artist, John Carroll Kirby is nothing short of a jazz genius, which in a sense is a genius’ genius. After the first song finished, John took the opportunity to address the crowd and thank us all for coming out. Sharing in

Uprising: An Afro Future Her-Story at Ford Theatre
Jazz is alive and well and it’s not just for the old folks! The Nonsemble – Jazz/Not Jazz at Left and Center (a collective group of music addicts) are fueling a movement of Jazz related art, music and lifestyle and have been doing their part to keep the scene thriving by providing Angelenos with quality events such as their most recent homage to South Africa’s National Woman’s Day, “Uprising: An Afro Future Her-Story” featuring Siya Makuzeni and Thandi Ntuli, two of South Africa’s top women in Jazz. Pro tip: If you have not attended a show at the historical Ford Theatre, I highly recommend that you do so as soon as possible. The lights, sound and ambiance are on point and the size of the amphitheatre is perfect for a great view even from the very back. A better venue could not have been chosen for this celebration, specifically considering nearly 100 years ago 2 women were the original visionaries behind what is now known as The Ford Theatre. In 1920, author and philanthropist, Christine Wetherill Stevenon and Mrs. Chauncey D. Clark joined forces to purchase the plots of land where both The Ford and The Hollywood Bowl sit today. Often

Versed in Virtuosity: Jacob Collier at the Fonda
Jacob Collier is such a bright and shinning talent, any performance of his inspires awe, fun, and connection in people. I saw one clip of him covering “Close to You” by Burt Bacharach and absolutely murdered that bass in jazz style. I missed him on his last tour through Los Angeles when he was still performing solo, bouncing between instruments like drums, piano, double bass, bass guitar, ukulele and vocals. At the age of 25, Jacob is one in a few of the self-made musical geniuses that took it upon themselves to produce their own albums, playing every instrument, and recording it themselves. This is what Jacob did with In My Room in 2015 but now, four albums later, Jacob is back in Los Angeles with a band of three other members and an entirely new show. related content: Shrine To A Goddess: Tash Sultana Sells Out The Shrine Expo Hall In Los Angeles With totems of light standing around the stage, the ambiance would change with the music’s texture as Jacob went from funk to jazz to folk. I was amazed from start to finish and I knew I would be the moment I was allowed to review this show.
