Ho99o9 EP Release Party at Mystery Box: An Initiation

What began as a harmless Ho99o9 show at Mystery Box in the outskirt bowels of DTLA ended in orgiastic ritual sacrifice, which will ensure ultimate hegemony of their newly-dropped EP Horrors of 1999. (free download) Okay, nothing about Ho99o9 is really harmless to begin with—the experimental punk rap group who have lit the underground on fire, and who recently proved far too bloodcurdling for Warped Tour. There’s a reason shows like these, hosted by i Heart Comix and Family Artists, are thrown in L.A.’s industrial limbo, which didn’t seem to drive fans away. In fact, the line was already down the block when I arrived. I entered the massive space, complete with foyer, main room with a sick stage, and spacious outdoor smoking patio where the bar was. I met up with Danny, Taylor, and David of Minivan who was snapping pics; and the four of us were met with inflatable sex dolls strung with nooses, graffiti, barbed wire, and most horrifically of all, only two porta-potties (It got ugly pretty quick). The opening band No Parents didn’t come on until close to midnight, along with the laser lights, black lights, strobe lights, and fog machines. For the next few hours, our

Faith No More at The Wiltern

Faith No More Wind Up The Wiltern on Opening Night

Words: Danny Baraz Photos: Dirt Junior If I HAD to list one musical influence that could encapsulate my love of listening to, creating, performing, critiquing and obsessing on music, without hesitation or pause, I would tell you Mike Patton.  Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, and Lovage. His dynamic vocals, the musicians he plays with, the uniqueness of his sound, his twisted lyrics and commentary and the prolific nature of his creative output are everything I aspire to as an artist and the measuring stick to which I compare all others. To say I am a bit biased on this subject would be an understatement. Faith No More were a part of a musical awakening for me and were also the gateway to discovering my favorite Mike Patton fronted band, Mr. Bungle. I was 14 years old when Faith No More’s, The Real Thing was released. I had never yet and still to this day, heard anything like it. You can imagine the excitement and trepidation I experienced when a new Faith No More tour and album were announced last year. Last night, Faith No More played the first of 3 sold out shows at The Wiltern. I was

Tod Seelie- Outland Empire

Tod Seelie’s “Outland Empire” opens at Superchief Gallery in LA

Tod Seelie– A New York based conceptual photographer opens a gallery show in L.A. with L.A. as his subject.  One might think that you would see images of glamour, celebrities and sparkling oceans and gentrified neighborhoods.  Too many have come in to this city with their lens to act as some sort of proxy paparazzi and half heartedly walked amongst the more obvious landmarks and landscapes to capture a cliche.  I knew, even before viewing his work at the Superchief Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles that that would not be the case with Tod Seelie. Tod Seelie’s show, “Outland Empire” captures Los Angeles and it’s outlying territories in a sort of post apocalyptic glamour. The glamor of tweekers and flamethrowers and the glamour of beer and sweat soaked teenagers in the midst of an angry slam pit.  Non obvious landscapes and non obvious people as subjects seems to be what catches Seelie’s eye. Eaddy from Ho99o9 mentioned that they would be playing a show at the Tod Seelie opening the other week and I drew a blank on the connection between the name Tod Seelie and his works.  Once I started doing some digging I came across his Bright Nights book and

Ho99o9 recruit your children to their Death Kult at The Church of Fun

Ho99o9 are the worst nightmare of white, middle America. The genre twisting duo piss on your patriotism, your politics, your god and your daughter as she explores her desires for fetish and black cock. Not only do they influence punk kids but they also have the hip hop heads.  Every demographic of YOUR children are in grave danger.  All the rules and protocols for basic human interaction are thrown out the window at a Ho99o9 show. Everything you think you know about punk rock, hip hop and humanity are challenged by this emerging talent that was spawned in hell by way of New Jersey. Last night, Saturday January 31st Ho99o9 played a show at an amazing DIY, artist venue called The Church of Fun and in the process, changed the game… even though most people don’t know it yet. In a packed little room filled with the type of people who make conservatives question the future of this country, the sounds of the hardcore/punk/ hip hop deviants pumped through the suspect sound system and I have rarely heard anything more magikal or evil. The writhing and swirling of violence bruised bones and stimulated the genitals of a room full of

New ho99o9 video: Casey Jones/Cum Rag

Very few bands encapsulate all the different music we love at Janky Smooth into one band more than the band ho99o9.  It’s not everything we love but it’s most of what we love, all in one band.  We’ve been hyped on them since the first rumblings of their existence. Ho99o9 dropped a new song/video today and fuuuuuuccccccckkkkk.  It’s the type of dissonant, distorted, digitized, angry and disturbed type of noise that can make my blood boil and give me goosebumps all at the same time.  I hate to jock anyone but I give credit where credit is due.  ho99o9 are the shit and we are more excited to see what they do in 2015 than we are about any other band. Ho99o9 are playing two L.A. shows this weekend and we highly suggest you make it to one, if not both. Lil B

A free show with Lil B, Trash Talk and ho99o9 at The Regent: What could go wrong?

Last week, a flyer started appearing online about a mysterious show at a mysterious location. I first saw it on Lee Spielman’s Instagram account. It listed three bands- Ho99o9, Trash Talk and Lil B and an RSVP link from event organizers and sponsors, UNIF clothing and HAM on Everything. That RSVP link displayed ominously and intriguingly, inviting all to show up early to an undisclosed location. What could go wrong? A line started forming around the Regent Theater in Downtown Los Angeles almost as soon as the location was announced. By the time I got there at 9pm, there was a snake of people, 20 deep, that wrapped around a square block of Main Street, around 4th, down to Los Angeles street and up to 5th street and back up to Main. The VIP line was also about 200 deep. For an hour, understaffed security wouldn’t let anybody in as the crowd swelled and the line kept getting longer and longer. I fought and burrowed my way through the middle to land on the coattails of young Mr Fucktard as he and his crew penetrated the threshold of the doors to the Regent Theater. There is no way I would’ve
