Space Roses: Ionnalee at the Fonda
Ionnalee is an international mystery, the scale of which parallels the mystery of the very cosmos in which she sings about and is clearly in sync with. It’s rare that pop music fans in America embrace a Swedish import as tightly and devoutly as they have with Jonna Lee but after seeing this futurist angel made of flesh and chrome perform live, the real mystery is how she isn’t on the top of the charts with monuments of her erected of the moon. related content: Adult. Interview: Warriors For Weird Formerly performing under the moniker, Iamamiwhoami, Ionnalee’s synth pop is polished, sweeping, danceable, vogue-able, and communicates both in sound and lyric, ideas and feelings that make you realize your insignificance existing between space and time but also your transcendence above space and time as as a soul and stars made into flesh. Ionnalee shines with star power through her skin. She takes control of every stage, dancing without pause for over an hour with moves and artistry only she can execute. She only creates the visual component of her set, projections of space, black and white Richard Avedon-esque dramatic realist imagery, science fiction, all in starkly contrast shadows and highlights.

Versed in Virtuosity: Jacob Collier at the Fonda
Jacob Collier is such a bright and shinning talent, any performance of his inspires awe, fun, and connection in people. I saw one clip of him covering “Close to You” by Burt Bacharach and absolutely murdered that bass in jazz style. I missed him on his last tour through Los Angeles when he was still performing solo, bouncing between instruments like drums, piano, double bass, bass guitar, ukulele and vocals. At the age of 25, Jacob is one in a few of the self-made musical geniuses that took it upon themselves to produce their own albums, playing every instrument, and recording it themselves. This is what Jacob did with In My Room in 2015 but now, four albums later, Jacob is back in Los Angeles with a band of three other members and an entirely new show. related content: Shrine To A Goddess: Tash Sultana Sells Out The Shrine Expo Hall In Los Angeles With totems of light standing around the stage, the ambiance would change with the music’s texture as Jacob went from funk to jazz to folk. I was amazed from start to finish and I knew I would be the moment I was allowed to review this show.

Photo Recap: Albert Hamond Jr. at the Fonda
Albert Hammond Jr. has no problem selling out big venues in Los Angeles. We love the Strokes. We love Albert’s style and swagger. Hot of the heels of his 2018 album Francis Trouble, Albert has kept making music in the same kind of cool that the Strokes were always known for. Opening for Albert Hammond Jr. was In the Valley Below. Pedro Carerra was there to shoot the show and you can look at his pictures and see exactly what makes Albert Hammond Jr. such a compelling singer and guitarist. Nothing’s Sexier Than Success: The-Dream at the Fonda
What is success? I’m sure Google can supply its own blasé explanation, but in an age where boundaries of race, class, and culture are becoming increasing indefinable, the goalposts of success have also drifted into a twilight zone whose borders shift as often as our expectations of what is possible these days. Thanks in equal part to an increasingly competitive media landscape and the rising ubiquity of social media, visibility and success have practically become synonymous. However, as anyone working the in the higher echelons of any industry knows, it’s often the people with the lowest profile who hold the real keys to the kingdom. related content: Corn Dogs, Fashion, Puke, And Rap: Camp Flog Gnaw 2018 Such is the case with seminal R&B act The-Dream. While by no means an unknown, after thumbing through even a short list of his production and writing credits, he has undeniably become more famous as a power-behind-the-throne figure than as a musician in his own right. Although comparisons to the music moguls of yore hold water on first diving into his output, unlike them, The-Dream shares more as an artist and culture driver with the éminence grise of politics, who conduct themselves concurrently as

Take This: Win 2 Tickets to Blackberry Smoke at the Fonda
Blackberry Smoke are one of the greatest modern country rock bands with bluesy guitars and southern style. Hailing from Scottsdale, Georgia, this is a band too good to belong to the modern era. Nothing about this band is watered down, nothing about them is corporate, soft, compromised, or packaged. This is good ol’ fashioned muddy bayou rock that just so happened to be good enough to make it to an arena level. Supporting the band at this Fonda Theatre show is outlaw country’s young, heartbreaker, two punch princess, Nikki Lane. Return to the Land of Rape and Honey: Ministry at the Fonda
Donald Trump is the subject of many musical endeavors, lyrics fling his way like shit, staining his image and legacy forever amongst fans of underground music. I imagine it’s hard being a Trump supporter and being a legitimate music fan, for the first few years, you couldn’t go to a heavy rock or hip hop show without seeing your president smeared and made a mockery of. If you’re not totally dogmatized by the Donald, you will most likely side with an artist over him or any politician. Ministry has been one of the most politically vocal bands of the Trump presidency. Bands that are young and angry seem to fall short of Al Jourgensen’s impressive political grumpiness and angst. In the world of metal, punk, and the genre he popularized, industrial, Al is a beacon of light and truth to look up to. He’s not polarized left or right but he unabashedly admires Antifa and also has a history of mingling with Alex Jones in the past. He’s a political maverick, in other words, so don’t try to pigeon hole him to give your side any extra points. related content: Ministry Make Bid To Be Official ANTIFA House Band AT

Gimme Gimmes for Christmas: Interview with Spike Slawson and Joey Cape
Before Me First and the Gimme Gimmes took the stage at the Fonda to perform an epic set for the Holiday season, I had the chance to sit down with Spike Slawson and Joey Cape from the band and discuss everything under the sun. related content: Me First & The Gimme Gimmes Janky Smooth Sessions W/ Spike Slawson Dave: Hey guys. We’re sitting down with Joey Cape and Spike Slawson from Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Welcome back to LA. “Santa Baby” came out today…we heard it on the way over. Joey: I saw the link but I don’t do the social networking thing anymore. I think someone sent me a link to it. Spike: I took Facebook off my phone…it was getting aggravating. Dave: Is this a single song drop…is there a Christmas album in the future? Are you going to start doing this stuff more? Spike: For now, just the song… maybe a few more (songs) to play live. I don’t know if there are that many Christmas songs that I would want to do. Joey: This is an obvious thing that a cover band should do, and it’s come up over the years a few times.

Photo Recap: Kruder and Dorfmeister at the Fonda
Legendary Austrian down-tempo DJ duo Kruder and Dorfmeister came to play the Fonda Theatre on their brief American tour. Featuring some of the coolest mixing I’ve heard heard and most beautiful and deliciously disorienting visuals I’ve ever seen, this show was one for the books. The audience was also my favorite of 2018 featuring Europeans from every region and 90’s club kids that danced like they were still in their 20’s and on ecstacy. Photos by: Dillon Vaughn

Photo Recap: The Damned and Radkey at the Fonda
The Damned sold out the Fonda Theatre last week for their Evil Spirits tour. Just in time to catch the back end of the Halloween season, people were dressed up and ready to party like ghouls and devils. Supporting The Damned were young up and coming rockers, Radkey. Hailing from Missouri, this trio plays with a metallic sound that is unquestionably heavy, punky, and American. related content: Dab Hits And The Damned on 420 At The Glass House Photos by: Lindsay Arth The Damned Radkey
