Every Maggot Learns to Fly: Knotfest Roadshow at North Island Credit Union Amphitheater

I have to admit, Slipknot was my very first concert. It was the 2004 Jagermeister tour featuring support from one of my favorite bands, Fear Factory. Even back then, Slipknot put on an unforgettable show where the theatrics, pyro, visuals and stage antics were just as impressive and psychotic as the instrumentation. Almost twenty years later, the band has only grown in size and spectacle and having sold out North Island Credit Union Amphitheater, it goes to show that you can never underestimate the power of this fanbase. More than any other band, Slipknot have cemented themselves as the band for the outsiders. There are people accepted by the mainstream culture, then there are Maggots. To be a maggot you must feel music differently than most, then maybe, the meatgrinder of metal that is Slipknot’s sound can touch your black, tender heart. I remember one interview with Clown where he summarized the band in very simple terms. Words and Photos by: Abraham Preciado The West Coast High Tour rolled through the largest and one the most spectacular theater in Los Angeles, The Wiltern, last weekend. Headlining the tour were rap icons from South Gate, Cypress Hill. The legends were accompanied on tour by Demrick, Xzibit, and Hollywood Undead. related content: Make America Green Again: The Great American Smoke Out Demrick and Xzibit took the stage first and ignited the crowd with their respective hits. The artist’s also dropped songs from their collaborative project, Serial Killers, which were definite hits with everyone in attendance. It was exciting to see Xzibit live and still be at the top of his game. LA’s rap/rock band Hollywood Undead also brought their “A” game to The Wiltern and performed hits from their entire catalog of music. Hollywood Undead’s set was an adrenaline rush to the crowd. related content: Black Baptism: Prayers At The Fonda In anticipation to Cypress Hill’s set, smoke filled the Wiltern as the crowd prepared for the group’s entry on stage. Words and Photos by: Maggie St. Thomas Master rap artist Snoop Dogg celebrated 25 years of Doggystyle, his debut album on Death Row Records. Produced in 1993 by Dr. Dre with cover artwork by Mr. Joe Cool, Doggystyle sold almost a million copies within its first week of being released. While taking the sold-out arena back to the days of old school hip hop using the microphone as a time machine with heavy weights Cypress Hill, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and adding a heavy dose of hazy funky infusion with Slightly Stoopid and reggae legend Don Carlos. Though the words on the flier read that Wu Tang Clan, Berner, and Warren G were scheduled to perform, so were the words ‘line-up subject to change.’ It didn’t seem to matter as the legends murdered the stage, and if you were a participant in that hot-boxed arena at The Great American Smokeout you got more than your money’s worth.
