A long hike up the hills of Elysian Park is a small price to pay for the view from the top. IMAGES COURTSEY OF GOLDENVOICE The Good: Camp Flog Gnaw 2019 was curated with artists that challenged everyone’s concept of what a live performance could be. Boundary expansion is what this festival and crowd have always been about and this year was not only no different from the past but an outlier after such stellar performances like that of FKA Twigs, Tyler, the Creator, and Thundercat. Also, with the festival at Dodger Stadium, the view of the downtown skyline is a constant reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful city as Los Angeles. The Bad: Many of the artists who were billed high atop the lineup were actually unimpressive live. Listening to their sets felt like slogging through the minutes in anticipation of the few acts people truly cared about. So, this year the lineup was under-billed and a few of the names it did have were nothing special. The Ugly: Generation’s Z and their reaction to Drake being revealed as the surprise guest are ugly. Los Angeles’ fashionable youth came out in full force to see the hip hop lineup of the year at Dodger Stadium for Tyler, The Creator’s annual Camp Flog Gnaw. Call it a camp but it’s more of a concert carnival with every sort of fanfare and confection you’d find at a state fair. Slushees, corn dogs, donuts, topsy-turvy rides, every kind of fatty fair food, games, and even post-mates bicyclists to fetch you whatever your lazy ass desires. related content: Camp Flog Gnaw 2015: Beats, Beefs, And Building Your Brand Camp Flog Gnaw 2018 sold out in less than an hour and afterward, ticket prices skyrocketed into the thousands. With numerous millennials paying for their tickets off their rich parents’ dollar, there was something undeniably youthful and nihilistic about the crowd and how hard they’d party. On my way there, plenty of Ubers and Lyfts had to stop off the side of Vin Scully Avenue to let their passengers puke out the window. The puke didn’t end there, the various coasters people launched their bodies on only dispelled more wet, looney lung butter out their vulnerable gutty-wuts. Camp Flog Gnaw 2015: Beats, Beefs and Building Your Brand

As I entered Exposition Park for the next annual installment of Camp Flog Gnaw, I was consumed by visions of khaki’s and polo shirts. Many attendees resembled prep school students more than the stereotypical image of hip hop fans. There was very little evidence of “hip hop past” and it’s baggy clothing, ironed creases and crisp snap backs. Rapper, producer and entrepreneur Tyler, The Creator continues to create the entire Camp Flog Gnaw world in his own image, with a tireless output and an ever evolving sound and aesthetic, fans are buying in; big time. But to say that it’s “all about the music” would be disingenuous. If the contemporary artists’ financial success were solely based on their music then Tyler wouldn’t be such a standout powerhouse (being the best isn’t enough). With streaming music services and P2P sites making album sales almost irrelevant, acts like Tyler, the Creator and indie bands like The Growlers with their “Beach Goth” festivals are at the forefront of building the new music industry.
