Glorious Leader, Kim John Kill: Mosswood Meltdown 2022

Warning: This article contains humor. A lost art among some, yet one cherished till the grave by this writer and self-professed fool. Jokes, gags and gut-busters bring us closer to some elusive human truth, even in the case of fart jokes. No one is safe, but you can subscribe to certain ideologies that will vaccinate you from this humor and gain you entry to the “no punks allowed” club. If you’re wondering what the name of this article is all about, it’s a merging of all three queens of Mosswood Meltdown into one radioactive mutant. I created this title after realizing the original title was not going to fly in 2022, if this was 2002 though and Jason Biggs was headlining, you better believe I would’ve went with my first choice. “Kim John Kill” does not by any means a suggest any relation between Bay Area punks and communists like Kim Jong Il, though I’m sure he’d do well if he was booked at Eli’s. I was so thrilled to be back at Mosswood Park. To me, this festival is more than just a gathering of bands and rad fellows. This is an annual tradition that brings me closer to

Photo Recap: Bikini Kill at the Greek Theatre

Ever since Bikini Kill‘s string of Hollywood Palladium reunion dates, Los Angeles has been hoping to see the Riot Grrrl legends take the stage in our fair city once again. That time finally came when they played the Greek Theatre on April 28th and at this show, every woman and man that entered were inspired. Given the recent Supreme Court leak revolving around Roe vs Wade, it’s important men start recognizing the shared humanity from art and sentiment expressed by women. See a woman’s outrage and let it make a real impact on you, stop relegating those emotions as something coming from an other. Bikini Kill at the Greek were phenomenal and we got the pics to prove it. Now please, behold Kathleen Hannah in all her genius and glory. Photos by: Michelle Corvino Bikini Kill

Kathleen Hanna and The Julie Ruin

The Julie Ruin at The Troubadour: Vagina’s and Surprises.

Kathleen Hanna is an icon. She is the nut crushing, vagina wielding, punk singing, ear ringing legend of a once, DIY militant feminism. A militancy that was absolutely necessary in a 90’s era of violent, male dominated, testosterone injected dominance of the American punk scene. Her band, Bikini Kill, not only gave girls a voice in that void of misogynistic obliviousness but insisted on “Girls to the Front!”. On Thursday, November 6th, her band The Julie Ruin headlined night 6 of Red Bull’s 30 Days in L.A. at the Troubadour. The irony of looking at the big, corporate Red Bull logo behind Hanna all night was not lost on me but if Nirvana could start from the Kill Rockstars record label, to Sub Pop and eventually end up on Geffen, then The Julie Ruin could certainly play a gig with Red Bull Sound Select and retain their integrity. Bookings like this give Red Bull’s music division more and more street cred every day. I arrived at The Troubadour just before Red Bull band Bad Girlfriend took the stage. I was in a foul mood. I was fucking exhausted after covering 5 out of 6 of the 30 Red Bull dates
