The Calm Before the Shit Storm: S.H.I.T. at Zebulon
Words by: Danny Ryan Photos by: Albert Licano With the constant shifts of trends and sounds that have taken place in punk rock music throughout the years, shows nowadays can often feel as though the genre has been restructured so drastically that the roots of it are hard to find. With the current emphasis on the structured breakdowns in hardcore punk and the genre-bending influences found in emo and pop-punk, it’s a breath of fresh air to come across an artist that simply plays their music as fast and chaotic as possible. S.H.I.T.’s recent show at Zebulon with The Passing and Abuso De Poder was a stacked lineup that moved at lightning speed, epitomizing this classic formula of rapid instrumentals mixed with noisey feedback and the snarling character that punk rock was founded on. While recent evolutions of the genre have brought the scene to a larger audience, S.H.I.T. is a band with deep appreciation for the origins of punk rock and they aim to re-create the disorderly energy that the genre was known for. The most impressive aspect of S.H.I.T. is their ability to evoke this feeling of early punk scenes without emulating the past in a nostalgic way

You’ll Cowards Smoked Crack With Viper at Zebulon
Have you ever seen a unicorn? Not in some kind of drug-fueled hallucination or dream but in the flesh, standing right before you. It would surely cause a crowd to gather and if word got out, you would expect people to travel far and wide to see it. Then when someone decided to start selling tickets to view the creature, you could rest assured they would sell out in mere seconds on the internet. This is the case for those who bought tickets to see Viper at Zebulon presented by the incomparable Eighty-Four productions. We all saw a unicorn perform songs off their iconic record, You’ll Cowards Don’t Even Smoke Crack. There are many ways to book a show like this. Given the audience of deep music heads that sold it out in seconds, a hardcore band will do the trick in providing a proper complement to Viper’s chill vibes and insider audience. Fans of outsider artists appreciate heavy music, though the label “Outsider artist” is surely a foolish one. Real artists are all outsiders. Texas’ Skourge was up for the task to open for Viper. The band was wearing their state’s pride and joy hardcore bands on their shirts

84 Ways to Die: Horrendous at the Echo
Eighty-Four has quickly become a brand indicating quality booking of local, national, and international acts alike and the recent Horrendous + Of Feather and Bone mini-tour kickoff at the Echo showed no signs of that changing any time soon. Local support acts for the evening were some of LA’s top up and coming underground acts including the buzz-worthy Mortal Wound, mean as hell two piece Encoffinized, and the pummeling rifflords Kommand. Of Feather and Bone are an excellent introduction to the Denver scene and a perfect example of the difference in style between the mile high city and LA. Their set at the Echo was concise and crushing: a clear result of a well refined act marking their place by giving the uninitiated a no holds barred beating. In a genre so focused on being the most extreme, bands like Horrendous stand out as a breath of fresh air. There’s a clear progression in style and complexity in their recorded material that’s allowed them to reach their current pinnacle with 2018’s Idol. In a live setting the songs are fully realized with an added layer of infections excitement; it’s clear they’re truly having fun performing. Without a doubt these guys are
