Photo Recap: Yob and True Widow at 1720

Yob is doom metal’s most powerful trio. The motto “Yob is Love” is something you feel anytime you feel the warmth within their kinetic synergy onstage, as their bombastic doom sounds pass between each player. Love is what you feel as you blast through walls of sound and come out the other side feeling no pain, but pleasure instead. They played 1720 with True Widow and gave the city another taste of doom metal redefined through their transcendental lens. Yob True Widow

PHOTO RECAP: Drain at 1720

SOS Productions should stand for Sold Out Shows because they are on fire with their recent events, most notably Drain‘s appearance at 1720 which brought every kid and their boogie board out of the wood work to surf the crowds all night during this hardcore banger for the history books. If you’re not familiar with Drain by now, they’re one of the dopest sounding hardcore bands with a crossover edge at the moment. Their Sound and Fury set is so legendary, crowds keep trying to recreate the magic. Along with No Pressure and Ingrown, this was a night LAHC won’t soon forget. We stan for Drain here at Jankysmooth, so here are a bunch of photos from the night. Photos by: Manuel Arredondo Drain No Pressure Ingrown

The Pharaoh’s Favorite Death Metal Bands: Nile and Incantation at 1720

Lineup changes, signing to Napalm Records, taking Sanguisugabogg on tour, and combining forces with the almighty Incantation were just a few reasons I had to check out Nile‘s Los Angeles show at 1720. Nile is one of my favorite death metal bands, not just because they’re brutal, crushing and technically awesome, but with their use of Egyptian imagery, I’m able to bite into a more cohesive, fuller vision that harnesses a whole world of brutality beyond death metal–history and mythos. related content: Soulfly And Nile: From The Amazon To The Whiskey A guy dressed as King Tut, touting an Egyptian staff romped around the pit during each band, cursing the mosh pit to higher levels of violence it would’ve never reached otherwise. This made my first viewing of Sanguisugabogg all the more intriguing. What I appreciated most about this band, currently stirring up a bunch of hype in underground circles, was how dirty their sound was. I was just reminiscing the other day on how Chris Barnes era Cannibal Corpse created the superior death metal sound as every instrument added to a more rotten, decayed atmosphere. Sanguisugabogg doesn’t sound rotting as much as they sound filthy and gritty, but that’ll

Alien Boys and Girls: George Clanton and Magdalena Bay at 1720

I’ve been waiting to see George Clanton in concert again since Desert Daze 2019. During that weekend, I remember being a little hesitant, maybe even prejudice against, seeing any artist that would make their name a play on another artist’s name. Something about that gesture never sat right with me for my own elitist reasons. As it turns out, Clanton is George’s birth name. That weekend in 2019, when I got to the Temple stage to see his performance, I realized George Clanton was the most powerful, imaginative and ambitious musical mind at the entire festival. The tone of his electronics simultaneously cut right through to the core of your heart while warming that infinite substance inside that you call a soul, all while making that material prison of a body dance like crazy. I try to put myself in the shoes of George Clanton when the first fizzle of an idea for a new composition comes into his mind like an arrow straight from God and I just can’t imagine how cool it is to feel such pretty abstractions playing out to such a wonderful soundtrack. George Clanton is one of those alien boys, not quite like the rest

Every Night is Halloween: Boys Noize at 1720

Words and Video by: Michael Melnick Electro-house legend Alex Ridha; or as you know him, Boys Noize; made a pit stop at 1720 warehouse in DTLA last Friday for what would be a more intimate banger than what a DJ of his caliber might be used to playing. Needless to say,  the venue was buzzing well before Alex hopped on the decks. Greeted by fans, friends, and a plethora of photographers, there was a clear consensus that 1720 was the place to be that night. Nothing like a dark, grimy warehouse with great sound and production value to compliment the performance of a legend with a cult-following and growing fanbase. related content: Love In The Time Of Covid: Baltra At Don Quixote Celebrating the release of his most recent album:  +/- (pronounced Polarity), a 3 hour set of new music had a sold out crowd locked in and dancing like crazy from start to finish. Every Boys Noize performance feels special, because Alex makes them that way. There’s no better feeling than being hyped up by an artist who treats every set like it’s their last–and Boys Noize does just that. It was almost nostalgic hearing new tracks that compliment Alex’s

The Sound of Summer, the Fury of Fall: Fiddlehead at 1720

It’s been two years since the last Sound and Fury festival and without it, the Los Angeles hardcore scene lost its vital summer summit. The scene is still alive and strong but without Sound and Fury, it seems to be less alive, less self-aware. LAHC’s growth was stunted in a sense but now with the first Sound and Fury show since 2019 happening at 1720, the scene picked up right where it left off, with bands like Fiddlehead and Spiritual Cramp killing it as if we didn’t just lose two years of our youth. Sound and Fury was always the perfect encapsulation of youth culture and music. It illustrated the peak of summer–the sun’s heat against the downtown concrete–youthful style combinations of shorts, tattoos and band tees–easily healed bodies being destroyed in the pit only to stride out and rejoin the party as if nothing happened. So, with all these things missing for two years, it was only right that Sound and Fury returned with the catharsis of melodic post-hardcore. related content: Boston Calling: Sound And Fury 2019 I entered the building as Object of Affection was wrapping up but the tail end of their set I witnessed was riveting
