Celebrating 30 Years of Stones Throw Records w/ 3 Pairs of Tickets for Lodge Room
In celebration of their 30th anniversary, iconic Los Angeles record label Stones Throw Records is hosting one of the most uniquely experimental lineups we’ve seen in recent years from October 16th-18th. Taking place at The Lodge Room, Stones Throw is hosting a massive 3-day outdoor party in Highland Park with a lineup ranging from hip-hop to psychedelic rock to electronic to funk and even to experimental jazz; all in representation of the ambitious goal that the label has had of completely shattering the boundaries of genre throughout the past three decades. This is not a lineup that Janky Smooth readers will want to miss with N8NOFACE, Automatic, Los Retros, Mild High Club, Egyptian Lover, Sudan Archives, Bardo, J. ROCC and Peanut Butter Wolf- just to name a few. You can buy tickets now or enter our social media ticket giveaway @jankysmooth for a chance to win a pair of tickets – read to the end for details. related: Arroyo Secodelic Fest is Re-vibing The L.A. Dream Jams: Arooj Aftab at Lodge Room
I don’t know what first compelled me to attend Arooj Aftab‘s show. I had no idea how her music sounded, I just knew I would like it somehow. It must’ve been some urge to be unique, to prove to myself my taste wasn’t basic. I always loved “world music”, whether it was old world or new but when you think about it, that genre-classification is rather reductive and othering of whole slews of artists that don’t fall under the umbrella of western music. Is the west not a part of the world? I can say though, I’m becoming a fan of Pakisani musicians because there seems to be a trend happening right now, not just with Arooj Aftab’s more classical approach but also bands like Aurat who I saw opening for King Woman at the Lodge Room in August. related content: Morning Stars Over Lodge Room: King Woman’s “Celestial Blues” Release Party There was some dreamy quality to the evening, even before the music started, the streets in Highland Park were empty and many of the most popular shops were closed. Usually, when I go to the Lodge Room, all these places are bumping with music and chatter. The Lodge

Speaking in Jazz: John Carroll Kirby at the Lodge Room
One of the silver linings of the pandemic is that being deprived all our favorite things for over a year makes us truly cherish them now that they’ve returned. “Don’t know what you got, till it’s gone”, in the Cinderella sense of the adage, applies here, to this John Carroll Kirby concert at the Lodge Room. I use this cliche because we are seeing it play out in real time. John Carroll Kirby‘s was the second artist to sell out the venue since its re-opening and the sort of people that bought tickets and cocktails on this evening weren’t the sort that might attend an experimental jazz show at any previous moment of their lives. Having gone without the spiritual sustenance of music has made all our souls rather emaciated over the last year, so like a vampire that smells human blood, we are fiending live music now more than ever. That’s not to take away anything from the artist, John Carroll Kirby is nothing short of a jazz genius, which in a sense is a genius’ genius. After the first song finished, John took the opportunity to address the crowd and thank us all for coming out. Sharing in

A Smooth Guide to Lodge Room Shows in 2021
When the pandemic began, Janky Smooth was in the middle of Lodge Room month, a month dedicated to one of the best booked, most intimate, perfectly located, perfectly lit and unique venues in Los Angeles. Now that someone hit the play button and took the world off pause, we’re gonna keep featuring the Lodge Room and its shows because we curate only the best content. I wanted to lay out the Lodge Room’s slate of shows in a calendar of sorts for the rest of the year, many of these shows are musts for our list and should be for yours. John Carroll Kirby – June 25th John Carroll Kirby‘s jazz is progressive, rhythmic and transports you to many musical landscapes, all of which are chill and revelatory.
